Bored out stock carbs and billet intakes finally came today! First impression, they look very well done, they are blended much better than stock. The slides are polished, and supposedly drilled, I have not yet opened the top to see. Here is the inlet side, you can kind of see the difference in the size and swirl. I borrowed this pic from Toonces air filter thread for comparison.... Intake side, increased from 35.5mm to 38mm, polished and swirled for velocity Here is the manifold side, bored larger by 2mm and with a new butterfly valve and here it is opened up a side by side manifold comparison, nice new billet! another angle and the insulated piece for between the head and the new manifold for heat transfer. a complete setup nice, clean job Unfortunately, the boot to actually mount the carb was forgotten, so it's on the way, or else these would already be on my bike. When I change them out, I will take side by side pics for everyone to see, discuss, admire, whatever . As I said in a few other posts, these carbs were flow tested at 234 cfm's, up from 199 stock. They also tested on a dyno, showing a 5-6 hp increase on a bone stock bike with no performance upgrades of any kind. Not even air injection removal. I'm hoping to get mine on a dyno soon, it may be a few weeks or more though. Hopefully I get at least that much of an increase. This should turn out to be a completely affordable option for carbs for anyone looking to upgrade. Fast Fred is offering these for $360, and I think he has cores, so there would be no down time. I don't know if the manifolds are included in that price, I have a different deal worked out with Freddy, which includes reground cams that are coming my way soon. Like I said, As soon as the other parts come in, I will take the stock carbs off and take side by side pics for comparison, hopefully early next week.

Those look nice! I may have to research that a little more. Right now I am leaning towards the 39mm FCR's but I may have to see how these perform. Looks great though!!

Dave, Those look good. Really good. I wonder if he could knife edge the intake side of the butterfly, if it would even make a difference. Either way....this looks like a good mod for a good price.

yeah, but he's gotta eat too. his original price was for just the inlet side, not the manifold side. double the bore work. still seems pretty fair....

Looks like someones eat'in steak tonight!
Just kidding. I'm envious that in this current economy someone can continue to make preformance mods, when I struggle to maintain the status quo, all while I'm dying to make some performance mods myself.

Like I said, I have a deal worked out with Freddy, or else this would be on the back burner. The cool thing is I'm kind of the guinea pig for all this work he's doing, so I have stuff nobody else has yet

I really want to get some serious side by side photos going here so you can see the difference in size, but I'm not taking the stock off until the last parts get here. It's definitely noticeable to the eye.

I spoke with Fred again today and FWIW, he said the bored stock carbs only flow 30cfm less than the 39mm FCR's that some places sell for $840.00 image here of the Keihin 39mm FCR

I may have missed this along the way.... But how did this whole carb boring thing get started in the first place? Any advantage other than the obvious cost and straight bolt on ability?

more cfm's making more air in the compression chamber making more power, also better atomization of the fuel which should make for improved fuel economy

Which mod improves atomization? Larger throats generally produce the opposite effect due to reduced velocity. Also, has anyone dyno'd these modified carbs on our bikes?

It's the way they are swirled and blended in the throat of the carb, from what he tells me, just like the swirl finish inside a worked head will improve the atomization. Fred has dyno'd the carbs on bone stock bikes and gotten 5-6 rwhp on the dyno. I am going to dyno mine as well and post numbers as soon as I can. He also told me that I will be using a smaller main jet than what I have now because it's more efficient. I have 155 mains, he's got me dropping down to a 135. Thats with a 904. I guess the dyno will tell all.

So who's Fred and who got the ball rolling on all this anyway?
I figured there were power benefits... obviously! Just wasn't sure if there was something else going on here besides that.

Fred from Fast Freds Headworks, he has a vendor thread over at newbonnevilleriders.com. He has been doing Harleys and Hondas for years, and is really wanting to get people the most power for the least dollar possible. He has plans for producing billet heads for our motors for half the price of Triumph ones. He already has billet cylinders that he makes for 1100cc motors and just had 865 high compression pistons made for stock bore motors. Aside from these carbs, I've seen his head work first hand, and he has some new tricks that nobody else is doing on Triumphs right now. And he really wants it to be affordable for everyone, that's one of his main goals.

Does he have a website to check out? I think there was another thread about high comp pistons... I'd love to go that way with my 790... Hi comp pistons, some nice bored out carbs, Seems like a nice alternative to a 904!

I think there is still a set of 865 jugs and pistons available here: http://www.britironriders.proboards.com/...mp;page=1#13549 Combined with your stock cams, could be a potent upgrade for cheap.

Just an FYI about Fred. Hes a man of few words....when it comes to email and posting on any web site. He prefers you call him and ask away. If you didnt know this you would think hes kind of a jerk based on his very very short written responses.
Hes also protective of his technology. Another reason his written details are lacking.
I did get him to write a decent reply to me. I think Im going to follow in Daves footsteps here and move this carb bore mod to the top of my list...later in the riding season tho...too many nice days coming up

When you get him on the phone, have plenty of time to talk, he'll tell you everything about his products, the numbers, what he's done to other bikes, how much power he makes on what mods... an hour may not be enough time. He's a really nice dude though.

Now it's back to the drawing board.... the intake manifolds need to be angle cut to fit our bikes. I'm sending him a stock one today, he is going to machine a brand new set one-off for me. It's a problem that I thought might exist, but it's hard to have a bike 4 states away from where the concept parts are being made. Good thing I have 2 sets of stock manifolds, I can still run the carbs while I wait for the billet intakes. I'm going to go put my bike back together and I'll post some pics later. Beautiful parts, it really looks good all together!

The filter on the right side fit fine, but since the motor is off-set in the frame, the left filter hits the frame under the seat. Smaller filter would work, but I don't have one. He wants to make these to fit all our applications, airbox in or out, side covers on or off, whatever. If the ones he sends me next fit, then he is going to order at least 20 more. Can I tell him there is some interest?
