Those are my thoughts as well. Although the lower end units will not give you gas stations, restaurants and such locations. That's why i am looking at something like the Nuvi series. Those 450's on fleabay are up to $250 so far...with 21 hrs to go. Paper maps are fine till you need two lane road detail. I gets round just fine with em too. It is just that sometimes I wish I had a GPS. When I was rolling from OKC to Birmingham a while back I sure could have used one then...instead of backtracking and asking at a local fuel station. Or the time I was day tripping in Upstate NY. Or the time the BRP was washed out round Mt. Mitchell and Linville Falls. or the time that neighborhood in Columbia swallowed me up.
