Well the zumo 450 has been discontinued. Darn-it. Should have picked one up when they were selling for 3 bills.

Garmin has two current zumo models. The zumo 660 and the zumo 550. The 660 retails for $799 while the 550 retails for $899. looks like the 660 replaces the 450 as the 550 has XM radio compatibility built in.

Zumo 550 Doesn't have "Where Am I?" (find closest hospitals, police & gas stations, nearest address & intersection):
zumo 660 does

the 660 is a touch screen and has all the other bells and whistles of the 550 cept for XM radio compatibility

Now why would one buy a 550? Seems to me that those are next on the chopping block.

Today's Research:

ritz camera: Zumo 660 for $660.29 shipped

I would like to get a motorcycle specific GPS receiver, but I cannot get over the price they are asking for these things. I guess I will just put up with paper maps a little longer.

The management guys on my tour bus all use the lowest model Tom Tom with great success both on tour and on their bikes; but, really now, $800 is an iPhone and half a year's AT&T dues plus it does all of that "Where am I?" stuff with aplomb plus you can actually use it as a phone. Just sayin'...

(full disclosure: I'm still a map guy, no GPS in hand)

The 660 is expensive but appears to be the best for a motorcycle currently available. They expect to be shipping at the end of the month and I have one on order from a different company. My understanding was Ritz was going into bankruptcy and the price I got was a few dollars cheaper. The 660 does not require satellite radio, it uses FM instead.

Try one of these....Street Pilot 2820....Brand new I believe for $245US. I got the SP 2730 for roughly $165US from Amazon. Another $50's for mount and power cable, etc.

Only the TomTom rider is water proof to my knowledge.

I have four GPS units and I am a map person as well. Those two things are not mutually exclusive.

The lowest price for the 2820 currently on Amazon is $227, which is price I could live with. The 2820 is considered water resistant, but not submersible.

The funny thing is that some power seller on Ebay has the 2820 for sale at $999.00 (he has 10 of them), but it does include free shipping.

I picked up a Tom Tom for around $75 at Cabellas for my wife's car. I had previously poo-pooed them as I'm a map guy (Yawn) but after seeing one work, I'm blown away by the technology.

(I've had a pod player for 4 years, and that still blows me away too -- all them songs, no moving parts, and rich full sound via in ear transducers - insert ape scratching head image -- geezers...)

Ed,
I hear ya. Who do you think I am? That's what I'd like to ask the folks at Garmin. One-Tenth the cost of my ride? Really, 8 c notes? BB time fo that happens. Looking for alternatives and reading this thread I have some more units to look at. The Nuvi 550 is one. also fleabay has some 450's. going to try for one of those.

So the bottom tier gps units are down to between 80 and 100 bucks, and they still give directions. I think that if I decide to get one, I can buy 4 or 5 of those and just pitch one if it gets wet and ruined for the price of the fancy XM radio and foot massage units that cost 800 bucks, and still have money to spend on gas!

Those are my thoughts as well. Although the lower end units will not give you gas stations, restaurants and such locations. That's why i am looking at something like the Nuvi series. Those 450's on fleabay are up to $250 so far...with 21 hrs to go. Paper maps are fine till you need two lane road detail. I gets round just fine with em too. It is just that sometimes I wish I had a GPS. When I was rolling from OKC to Birmingham a while back I sure could have used one then...instead of backtracking and asking at a local fuel station. Or the time I was day tripping in Upstate NY. Or the time the BRP was washed out round Mt. Mitchell and Linville Falls. or the time that neighborhood in Columbia swallowed me up.

take a look at a used 2610 Garmin. About anything you need, rugged, and waterproof. I have one and love it.

I bought the Zumo 550 in Dec, 2007 for $650. I like it a lot and will always have a motorcycle GPS from this point forward.

HOWEVER, if I had to buy one today I'd find the cheapest WATERPROOF gps and just use that. I don't use any of the other features of the Zumo 550 such as bluetooth, music, or radio.

NEVER use a printed map.

+1 I've had a 2610 for years, and I love it.

For what it's worth, I have a low-end TomTom in my cage, and I'm not really thrilled with it. Compared with the Garmin, the interface is really limited. Maybe it's better on the higher-end units, but I'm not a fan.

I'd love to check out a Zumo, but I won't drop coin on it till I see it in action.

I bought a Nuvi 755T for car/work use, $325 delivered. I chose this model for the free lifetime traffic updates. It has an MP3 player, which I didn't think would be useful. On Saturday, I was heading to Baltimore to ride with some Trump friends (not familiar with the area).

I uploaded a Mapquest route for the way I wanted to take (no interstate) and turned on my Led Zeppelin library. I bought a $6 set of earphones to hear music/commands. The Nuvi broke into songs for directions. This worked pretty well, although I need more of an ear-bud than the over-the-ear phones I bought.

It has about a 1.5 hour battery life but I can charge on the bike. That is if I had remembered to bring along the charging cradle....so, I got home the old-fashioned way. Which means I got sort of lost...
This certainly isn't a perfect GPS for the bike, but it worked well enough for occasional use in virgin territory.

I have a magnetic tank back with a very small hole in the lower corner. I put my Tomtom xl inside of it. The tank bag has a clear waterproof top. I run the cord to my AC adapter.

Same GPS used in my car.

I got the Garmin Street Pilot 2820 (water proof per Garmin) for $199.90 on Ebay. I also got the Garmin Motorcycle kit for $39.00 on Ebay. I just ordered a Tourmount handlebar mount (7/8") for $69.00, from of all places gatehousesupplies.com. It was $10.00 less there than Twisted Throttle.

I think I can take the power cable that came with the Garmin Motorcycle kit and adapt it to work on both bikes.

Tom....as I have the Garmin 2730 which is basically the same as your 2820, minus the Bluetooth feature, I have a suggestion for you. The first ride with my GPS showed me that the screen washed out in the sun and I couldn't see a thing on it. I ordered the GlareStomper and that cover improved readability a great deal. Email Dave Reichert and ask for the 2820 cover with slanted sides. It's made so you can get to the buttons easier and is not shown on the web site for some reason. The full cut version as illustrated does not fit as well in my opinion.

Smart shopping Tom. I went with the zumo because I was feeling flush and I didn't know enough to be more selective. I still love it but your setup will probably get you 99% of the function for a third of what I paid.
