if you search around the net you will find a few stories of catastopic failers of chains up around 30,000 or so. They come with little or no warning and without a lot of stretch before hand.
I replace mine at 20,000 along with both sprockets. I dont need a chain to break in the middle of a curve or heavy traffic.
