thanks for all the advice ive been getting on here. its much appreciated. Well my 05 America is still not running right. I replaced the plugs, checked the vacume lines and plugs, checked the air filter, checked the fuel filter and it still runs bad. Breakes down badly at low RPMs and at high RPMs. Midrange its not so bad. Both cylinders are firing, but not well. Any suggestions? Thanks again

How many miles on your bike? I had a bad coil give me a fit around 40,000 mile mark. Had similar issues to what you're describing. I picked up a set off ebay for cheap. All is well again!

A little over 17,000 miles. It doesnt seem like the coils should be fried yet

My ignition coil went bad before 20,000 miles. If it is the coil (and that's what it sounds like), you can get 2 Nology coils for the price of one Triumph parts coil and replace both sides.

Is that a single coil for both cyl? Will that work for a 270º as opposed to a 360º engine? Guys used to use a single coil with 2 leads for the old 360º twins. I never did I always ran 2 sets of points and 2 coils.

I'd try cleaning the carbs.... ignition system failures happen but not very often.

Might I suggest running a small amount of Seafoam in a full tank of gas. You can buy this at most big store autoparts.
It can work wonders on gummed up carbies and carbon deposits.
$8.00 bucks

This may or may not apply.... I have an 03 TA. It was a known issue that the paint on the inside of the fill neck of the tank would flake off and fall into the tank. The paint chips would cling to the screens on the petcock and drive you nutzo. Drain the tank and pull the petcock and see if the screens have any debris on them...
Again, this may be a non-issue with an 05, but it's a lot cheaper than replacing coils or other electrical parts.

And the Seafoam suggestion is a good one every 5-10 tankfuls, regardless.....

Have you checked the vacuum caps (known on here as mouse condoms) to see if they have cracked? Another thing to check would be the diaphragm on the vacuum piston in the carbs - I had one and it was causing a loss of power at high revs.

Good luck

ok so i hooked up a timing light to each plugwire and let it idle. the light would flicker when the engine missed, so im thinking it must be electrical. It has two ignition coils so how could both go bad at once?

Maybe the pickup in the alternator side of the engine case. Most likely the coil. had mine done last year 19000 or so miles.

If you use a timing light on a motorcycle hook the power leads to a separate battery not the cycle battery.

Is there a ground cable on the ignition side that might be loose? What about loose/bad connections on the side stand switch or other safety circuits?

Are you sure both sides are misfiring? I would think it highly unlikely that both coils would fail simultaneously.
I have to go along with what Gregger suggested on this one.
