I had the same need and went with a Ruger SP101 revolver (4"). It shoots the economical 38 spl as well as .357 for home defense. It's a hoot to shoot and is built like a tank. I also have a Ruger MKII .22 target pistol. The 22 is dirt cheap to shoot. If you get a larger pistol, I also suggest a 22. I just joined my local Izaak Walton League to get in more frequent practice.

I have looked at the Ruger and Smith & Wesson, and I think both are still made in the US. The Glock I believe is made in Austria. I haven't looked at the Springfield, but will.
