+ 1 on the XD. Have the .45. Similar in functionality to the Glock only with the addition of a grip safety (ala 1911). 13+1 capacity. Also recently picked up a S&W 10-8 heavy-barreled .38 Special, old cop service revolver, just for something different. Would make a great first handgun if you could find one. Proper .38 loads will do anything you ever need to and are much easier to control than .357. Also the ammo situation sux and it's gonna get worse. Get 'em while you can.
