The US Navy rescued Captain Phillips today after being held
hostage by Somali pirates for 5 days. Navy SEAL sharpshoters
took out 3 of the pirates when they poked their heads up out
of the lifeboat which they were holding Capt Phillips.
Three shots. Score: Seals 3, pirates 0.

Thanks to all who are in the service of our(or your)country.

Yayyyy for the Seals! This whole piracy thing is hard to fathom. The way I've heard it, it's against maritime law to arm your ship or your crew. Nuts! Arm every big ship with a deck 50 caliber, train and license the gunner, and treat the problem with the respect it deserves. Teddy R. never put up with this crap! Ahhh..., the times have changed.

Concur. Great shooting on the part of the Seals. Three somali dogs sent to ******.

This is a day to be proud. I suspect your average somali ocean going dog will think twice before messing with a vessel flying the stars and stripes.

When a somali terrorist ocean going or land lubber meets his maker it swells my heart with pride.

The problem is that cargo ships that are armored are not allowed in some ports and if they are, they are subject to inspection. But any ships that goes through those waters unarmed is just asking for trouble. Their main armament is fire hoses-which are pretty effective.

The average Somalian is just interested in their next meal. There is no functioning government or anyone to set rules so lawlessness prevails. These pirate criminals see nothing wrong in what they have done and the countries who have given ransoms have made a bad situation worse. You don't reward bad behavior.

Hooray for our guys on the site and hooray for the president and his advisor's who gave the OK twice to use deadly force.

So maybe the answer is to arm these ships with one .50 cal when going through these waters.
After the danger zone is cleared, 'ol Ma Deuce can get thrown overboard if necessary.
Compared to the cost of getting jacked, the cost of replacing it is trivial.

During the war, the Brits used to run some decoy cargo ships with drop down panels concealing 4 inch deck guns.

I am currently at sea on-board the USNS WATERS, which makes reading about this story a little more interesting. Our Chief Engineer is the uncle of the Chief Mate (now the Captain) on the Alabama.

Interesting that they have an Oscar and Zeke in the shadow of the right wing. When Enola Gay was at the Smithsonian, they took it all apart and displayed some of it along with a plaque telling all about how Pearl Harbor was all our fault.

Yes, they called them 'Q' ships and although they weren't in a lot of engagements, the ones they were in were very successful. Big surprise to the E boats out of Germany!

There was a map on CNN or somewhere showing the number of attempted hijackings from Somalia. Looked like they got about one out of 10 they went after.

Speaking of Little Boy, they have a one that was not used on display at the HW George Bush/Admiral Nimitz Pacific War museum in Fredricksburg, Texas. All they would need is the stuffings and I bet they could get that out of one of the missles they are decommissioning.

The Somalis would not have tried hijacking an American ship but the President of the US at the time of Black Hawk Down pulled our troops out rather than equip them correctly. Thus the Somalis think they beat the United Sates. BIG MISTAKE.

And so......we should stop killing them? Exterminators never win the wars against roaches, rats and vermin but they can be pretty good at cleaning up individual houses.

Let the extermination begin. No ransoms. No pity. Killem all. let their God sort out the good ones.

A dramatization of course but in the spirit of things most appropriate.

As far as I know, they have been non-violent, and the crew members on the captured ships say they were treated very well. It's been about money the whole time, and they always collect their ransom. A recent one that comes to mind is the oil freighter with billions of dollars of crude, and they wanted a 3 million dollar ransom. This has been going on for a long time, and the U.S. didn't act on it until Americans were on board. Why is that? It still has impact on the economy, this global economy.
It's too easy to say let's drop bombs, let's snipe them out, let's kill everything that's not red white and blue, but that's pure ignorance.
The worst part about this hijacking in particular, is that the ship was delivering aid to Somalia, their own people, and they intercepted it for ransom.

Like anyone long dead, Tom's statements can be interpreted in more than one way and the originator isn't here to provide any context. If he was at all anti-government, drafting the founding document of ours and nurturing it as our 3rd president was a pretty funny way to show it.

Also, an "effective" government doesn't necessarily mean a "big" or intrusive one.

I know, I know, Lance. I was juuuuuuust "funnin'" a bit there.

(...and ALSO maybe makin' the point that those out there who often DO seem to take the "selected writings" from those "long dead" to "prove their point", more often than not seem to wish to overly SIMPLIFY the more COMPLICATED issues that face the living today...SUCH as say, "Kill 'em all and let God sort 'em out!")

There is a lot to be said for the idea of destructive retribution.....served up by a technology driven superior armed force.

"Peace Through Superior Firepower" is no joke. Whether one is preserving one's own freedom or as was so often the case in wars of antiquity.

The Roman's established themselves via Superior Firepower as did the Greeks and every other successful military enterprise.

Genghis Khan was brutal in establishing his dominance as was Alexander The Great when necessary.

The best way to stop somalian pirates is to exterminate them once found in detail until the idea of piracy seems like a rather risky business.

Whether it be three at a time via Seal sharpshooters or high tech , high explosives delivered via aircraft, Naval surface and or underwater.

A few months of steady unmerciful destruction of all somalian vessels seen to be carrying the atypical pirate paraphenalia....destruction upon sight without provocation.

Turn the boys loose and let em have a little fun.

Ohh rah.

What baffles me -- and I'm trying to find the exact quote in the Wash Post -- is that the Somalians were appalled that we'd actually SHOOT someone. They were shocked that violence was used to combat violence. The attitude was basically "well, gee, d'ja have to KILL 'em?"

Ah, here is is -- courtesy of the Washington Post:

Quote:

In Somalia, in the pirate haven of Harardhere, where locals have benefited from millions of dollars in pirate ransom, the military operation seemed like a bewildering display of force against four errant young men. "It was wrong to kill those pirates," said Aisha Gurey, an Arabic teacher. "The international community is wrong, and the pirates are wrong. But in this case, the strong one has killed the weak one."

Nice to see that at least someone had the balls to go and sort the problem out.

Top marks to Capt Phillips for his exemplary behaviour and good sniping skills from the Navy Seals.

I'm just wondering who is going to get the part of Capt Phillips when the movie comes out.

Well, yeah, that would be pretty self explanatory to me.

Poverty does cause this type of thing. The French have worked really hard in that area too. Nothing seems to matter. Too much bad and not enough good to build on. Kinda like Mexico, the next nation to fail.
