I'm curious why so many people title a thread as OT, or off topic, when they start a new thread in the lounge. Isn't the lounge, by default, the perfect place for all posts/threads with no general topic? So could it be assumed that a post/thread in the lounge is going to be off topic from motorcycles? This had been weighing heavily on my mind for quite some time.
Should I just shut up and go have another drink?

Right. Nothing is "off topic" in the lounge.
So have another drink

Is this about a drinking problem or posting? Or a posting problem about drinking, or a problem posting while drinking. I want not to be OT.

Have another drink....

At one time there was a bit of a debate going on between the rods and mockers on here. Some considered any posting that was non-motorcyle related to be blasphemy. Others felt that it was valuable background information and good for the "family" to share their non - bike anecdotes.

"OT" was the solution. If you saw "OT" in a post title, you knew it wasn't a bike related post and you could ignore it so as not to offend your purist tendancies.

Then that brings the original question up about the lounge. It's obviously not about other bikes, parts, accessories, performance mods, or tech support, because there are sections dedicated to each of those topics individually. Again, by default, the lounge is nothing but one off topic thread followed by another, since the posts there have nothing to do with motorcycles, because when they do, they get moved to the proper section by the moderators. Theoretically, the only time off topic should be used in the lounge, is during a thread highjack. Say we are having a heated discussion about Michael Vick and dogfighting in a thread, and someone brings up the fact that Burger King just raised the price of a double whopper by 25 cents. That's a little OT, don't you think?

Just explaining the origin... it's current validity is open to debate. But if someone starts one, make sure you mark it "OT".....

Alternatively, if something is off-topic in the lounge, then, by rights, it should be about a topic depicted in the other sections.

So, is the WORD motorcycle Off Topic in the Lounge or not?

If it is then can someone move the posts above that have Motorcycle in them?
