Everytime I think of Bruce Dern, I'm reminded of an exchange he tells he had with John Wayne just before they filmed the scene in "The Cowboys" [1972] where Dern, who back then always seemed to be cast as characters suffering from, let's say, "extreme anti-social psychosis", kills Wayne by shooting him in the back.
According to Dern, "The Duke" walked up to Dern and said the following to him:
"Well ya KNOW, America is gonna HATE YOU for killin' me in this here movie like this!"
To which Dern said be replied:
"Yeah, you're probably right, Duke. But they're gonna LOVE ME in Berkeley!!!"
