Hi all. Just wanted to ask you all for your thoughts and prayers as I recover from injuries sustained in an accident with a deer on Monday night, March 30th. I got 7 cracked ribs, broken collar bone, cracked shoulder blade bone, bruised spleen and lung on my left side and broken wrist bone on my right. I've had a screw put in my wrist and been in the hospital till Saturday. I'm mighty sore but optimistic for a full recovery for myself and my bike. I havent seen the bike but Im told the crash bars and hardbags saved the bike. The forks were bent but the bike was started and driven to its current parking place.
The deer, a 90lb doe, was dead at the scene.
I hope to be back in the saddle before ridimg season is over but time will tell. I thank God that He has pulled me through yet one more time. I thank my friends and family for their support through this ordeal. I am seeking God's will. Thanks BA.com forum members and hosts.

Confidence is high!

Its more fun to be ridin'! I'm still ridin

Best wishes for a "speedy" recovery!

In the couple motorcycle incidents I've had in my life (none as bad as yours and others, though), the first question I always had was, "Is my bike okay?." Just curious if you had the same first thoughts through all of the pain and disorientation?

Good luck with your recovery? It sucks to miss the summer riding but its a good accident if you are awake and typing.

Best wishes on your recovery.

Besides the grace of God, how did you survive?

Where you wearing a helmet and body armour? Have on boots?

Glad that you are on the mend...being able to be on the mend is a good thing!

I hit big buck the first week I had my bike, just as he walked in front of me I hit the rears and fronts and the rear locked up, the squawk made him lunge and I hit his rear "knee" with my header and felt it through the bike but all was good, didn't even leave a dent, just "biological material" on the pipe. One may also consider the biological material I did well in containing!

Sorry to hear about your ordeal. I wish you a speedy recovery for you and your bike.
Deer are a serious problem around where I live too. My eyes are always on scan when I'm riding in my part of town.

****** are all American suicidal or just hate bikers...In Scotland the deer dont venture near roads very much. The noise startles them and tends to keep them in the hills where they belong. Get well soon ....bikes can always be repaired.

The deer are in abundance and they don't fear cars, trucks or motorcycles! Ditch rats is what we call them up here.

I just heard of a friend who stopped for a deer last week and was rear ended by a pickup truck. No serious injuries to man nor beast. The bike's in the shop for a new fender and lights and the rider is stiff and sore. In a week or so both bike and rider will be back to normal.

Sorry for your accident. Deer are problematic for bikers but our worst enemy is still .....Man within his cage and and a willingness to turn in front of us and swear inexplicably to the LEO after signing his ticket and watching the medevac chopper lift off to the nearest trauma center......."Officer....I never saw the bike" 13 wks still in hospital but rleased to weight bearing therapy as of last Monday.

Everytime the Physical therapist asks me to raise myself from my wheelchair and move 400 feet down a hallway inch by inch with my legs and body screaming in protest....I think of that guy that did not see me.

My thoughts are not always christian in nature.

Man is our worst danger.

I sorta disagree. I know what you're sayin, but at least if a cage pulls out if front of us, we can be reimbursed for our injuries from the insurance. Smack a "State owned" deer, and the State will thumb their nose at you for compensation. Just another injustice, of many, related to the deer problem. Hope ya recover soon, in tume for some summer riding time! Good luck to ya!

Hope you get well soon.

The route I take to work can be a bit of a problem with deer and it is probably one of the scariest things because they don't seem to move in any pattern or with any reason.

What makes it worse is they don't approach the road on their own they always seem to be in groups of three or four so when you think one has passed there are another couple lurking in the hedgerow at the roadside.

I say McDonalds should start selling venison burgers just to trim the numbers down.

Saw three today. Two walked across the street as we rode ...yes, walked! The third didnt even look up as I hit the PIAA. They are simply too used to being close to cars and humans.

Recover soon and heal well!

Well the the fact that its kinda hard to hold a deer responsible yet alone attempt to litigate compensation from a dead plate of venison.....

Yet you may have a point...however silly to contemplate in real time.

I am learning much about the fine art of winning as much of an award as possible from the at fault party as well as drawing UIM from my own policy. (Uninsured motorists underinsured et al).....

Make sure if at all possible the at fault driver has lots of insurance ...not the minimum allowed in your state. Also make sure the driver is not a Deer. (LOL) You will need a lawyer even if no suit is necessary to help you deal with Hospital liens and any subrogation efforts that might be coming from your HMO/PPO .

I have learned that hospitals and insurance companies (HMO etc) will try to get your award even after the med bills are all paid....their reasoning being that insurance does not pay full retail for med services but typically about 50%

So they will try to garner your third party award to get some back.

When you are the one hospitalized for four months ya sorta kinda want to get that money for your own devices.

We can tell lawyer jokes all night long but a good ambulance chaser can and will help you keep as much of the award as possible.

I hit a deer when I was a kid on a dirt bike. Didn't get hurt really and just messed the headlight up on the bike. The deer I think was OK too, it got up dazed and walked in circles for a couple minutes then ran off.

My grandfathers world record black bear was shot and fell on the other side of a huge fallen tree. When my grandfather got to the tree it stood up and roared. He had the presence of mind to just stick the gun to it's shoulder and fire to drop it again. I have the skull downstairs here. The bullet went in the nose and out the jaw on one side braking the back of the jaw away. That was the first shot and must have just knocked him stupid for a few minutes.

The bear would have measured even bigger than it did but the taxidermist boiled the skull instead of using insects to clean it so it shrunk some.

One night, on a sweeping curve, I rode through a herd of galloping raccoons without hitting a single one. Wish I could say that it was due to my expert maneuvering skills... I just held my line - not enough time to do much more.

Get well soon.
