I quit smoking almost ten years ago, but the new taxes caught my attention anyway. Apparently, legislators were concerned that taxing cigarettes (undoubtedly the largest potential resource for revenue) would push many smokers into rolling their own. To counter that, taxes on tobacco and tobacco tubes/papers read like import duties. Get this: Tax on roll-your-own tobacco will go from $1.09 per pound to $24.62. Someone paying $19 a can (in an effort to save money) will now pay $43. Tax on cigarette tubes and rolling papers will increase also, nearly 300%. I predict this is going to cause a lot of trouble for a lot of people. What a bunch of jerks.
