Hi, I am new to the site. Well not completely, but this is my first post. I have a 2007 America with the common mods. I am in the process of cleaning the bike up a bit and giving it a simpler look. I would love to relocate a mini/micro speedo into the console, or put a really small micro mechanical speedo on the bars. I have done a bunch of searchs and came up with some really old information. I was wondering if this has been accomplished, and if yes with what parts, pics would be great. I also have very little interest in spending hundreds upon hundreds of dollars in digital setups, that although are really cool, tend to take some of the adventure out of it. A cheap digital setup, would be OK, but doubt it exists.

I like the clean look of not having the speedometer up there. Whats that unit you installed in its place?

Quote:

Its a push bike speedo,
Its one of the more expensive ones but very basic functions, only five I think.
Tells you how fast, 180mph it says (I'll try it out on Sunday)
Total mileage and a trip which I use for fuel.
I've measured it on a known mile marker and its bob on.
The sensor is on the front disc, runs up the fork leg with all the other wires and cables. Pretty neat fix.
Theres a post somewhere with some photos.

Thanks for comments.

Chris

I beleive that speedo is a Sigma Sport BC 400
I don't think they make that model anymore, but they make comperable models still. From the research I did, Sigma Sports are commonly used for motorcycle, since they have the ability to read up to 180mph. My America doesn't quit go that fast..haahahaha. Has anyone tried the Drag Specialties 1-7/8" Electronic Speedo? If yes, what did you use for a pickup? How did you mount the pickup? Oh by the way, the Sigma Sports are not lighted.

Cheers

I have the bright idea (I hope) of moving the headlight down and forward 2 inches using a newspeedmaster headlight relocator bracket. This frees up plenty of room to shift the headlight forward and down, almost hidding it behind the headlight. This will serve to clean up the appearance of the bike and give it a lower look. I beleive I can fabricate a bracket to do it and still have it connected to the triple trees, BUT I am also considered making a small "U" shaped bracket and actually mount it on the back side of the headlight. Do you think mounting it on the back side of the headlight is a bad idea? That would look pretty clean in my opinion. I have seen pictures of a T100 with the speedo placed into the headlight...pretty nice.

How about one of the harley 48mm (real small), with a ratio of 2240:60 (believe this is what the Bonevilles use), even comes with a new cable and handle bar mount for 60 bucks. Has anyone tried one of these? Will the new speedo cable mount up to our tire, or will our cable mount to the back of this speedo? Basically are cables standard? If not what do we need?
Check out www.debrix.com and look at the speedo section. Pretty descent stuff for reasonable.

This looks nice and cleans up the look. Question? Is it legal to remove the odometer?

I am pretty sure you need a headlight, horn, and driving lights to register a motorcycle, that's about it. I am not sure if removing the odometer is legal if it came with one. I highly doubt it is, but the good news is....who cares what the law is, make yourself happy and do what you want...hahahaha.

In PA there is a law where if the bike came with it you are supposed to have it on there. I know it applies to turn signals, if the bike had them std. you are supposed to have them. This isn't strictly adhered to but is supposed to be. Now my chopper didn't even have a speedo on it and I never got hassled about it. I think not having one won't matter as far as riding the bike but don't tamper with one, that is illegal.

I guess if you do not have to sell your bike - and who would ever part with their TBA, the odometer is not needed.

I was just saying about PA since inspection is a state thing and I don't know what other states do. I never had my chopper inspected except once when Mountain V Twin was still open, Freddy slapped one on in 93 just to p!$$ me off.

I found a nice looking speedo that with a little work would fit in the spot for that tachometer. Someone on the site has installed a Dakota digital speedo in the same place. The one that I found is from MOTOGADGET, it is nice but they are quite pricey (that sucks) I found it on the Spiegler.com site. I believe that they are a speedometer/tachometer combination. The Dakota's are about a 1/3 of the price of these but it would definitely clean up the front end of the bike. Why does everything that is nice have to cost so much????

A couple of years ago there was alot of interest in putting an aftermarket tach in the console/ I beleive it was a Drag Specialties Tach. Apparently it bolted right in. Does anyone recall this and have any info on it? I want to check the part number of the tach to get it's size. I think Drag Specialties makes an electronic speedo the same size, therfore, it should bolt right in. I just don't know where to buy a pickup that would work for our bikes. All the ones I see are for Harleys and work off the transmission. I ordered the Newspeedmaster headlight relocator bracket and plan on mounting the stock speedo on the headlight if I cant find an electronic one to put int the console. There use to be a web site, showing how to install the aftermarket tach, does anyone recall this?

You mightve seen these pics before, but I moved my speedo down using the same bracket. The only hard part was reassembling the speedo with the modified bracket. Its snug

I guess the only problem with mounting it to the headlight would be making sure that the speedo angle is proper or aligned parallel to the triple trees like the photo above. It could be hard drilling bracket holes on a rounded surface like the back of the headlight.

With a small speedo could cut a hole in the back of the headlight if you have room and install a mini one in the headlight shell.

Brokenfixed Thank You for the Pics. That is very close to what I was thinking. Is that the Newspeedmaster Headlight Reloactor? I just ordered one (won't have it for about 3 weeks), I was hoping it would push the headlight forward a bit more, so I can tuck the speedo in just a bit more. I was able to see how you mounted it and it looks pretty simple with the stand off...thanks. Maybe I can do something with the old headlight standoff to set the speedo down like you did, would look pretty nice since it is already chromed. I drilled holes in my stock chain guard over the weekend, looks really pretty good, and is free!! Also did the horn relocation under the gas tank.

No problem at all

My headlight relocator was home made by the previous owner out of a piece aluminum, its not the newspeedmaster one. But you'll definately need it to fit the speedo in there correctly. Another thing you wanna watch out for is the extra slack you'lll have in the speedo cable hanging down. I have more of a problem because my front end is lowered.

How visible is that digital speedo in the sun?

BTW, LOVE the bike. Awesome. I gotta head over the bridge sometime and meet you for a beer.
