For those computer savvy on here, what brand, off the shelf, do you reccomend for an anti virus program? Norton? Other? Ours is running out and we'll need t reload one soon. Thanks in Advance.

This may help

I've had great luck with freeware AV apps
AVG comes to mind first in that regard

Last time I used Norton ( a few years ago?)
it was so bloated it felt like I was pulling another entire
operating system through the CPU, etc.

I have used Norton for years, used to be a good program. Stay away from it now , I have had nothing but problems with it and it is a resource hog now too.

Linux!!!

(I can say that now I'm officially converted.)

Assuming you wanna stay with MS (which begs the question-why?) try this site. I think the 5-star-rated ones are equally effective and it comes down to which interface you prefer.

On the various PC's I look after (family & friends), I use Avast!; it's highly rated throughout the industry...and it's free.

I used Comodo's Security Suite (firewall and antivirus) on my PC when I was running Windows.

With any of them, a good antispyware application (with real-time protection) is extra insurance. Again, plenty of decent free ones from the above site.

Also, consider using Firefox with the NoScript extension.

Rich, I like AVG...

I bought a copy of AVG at Best Buy and it trashed my PC. I reformatted and installed Mcaffee and have been very happy with it. I assume I already had a virus when I installed AVG, but being a paid user I thought I would get some help from AVG....Nothing by phone and nothing by Email.

In this case abstinence works. Just unplug your computer and you'll never get pregn... er, a virus (there's a difference?)...

Another vote against McAfee - as I sit here struggling with the wife's VISTA after my beloved XP laptop crashed hard under McAfee.

She loaded Norton 360 as a backup to McAfee, but I declined.

Buy a Mac.

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.
