Hi there,

Just as an update update for you.

I've been running these pipes for a bit now and have been steadily messing with them to aim towards a 'legal' or 'legalish' sound.

So far no luck, I seem to be cooking the packing fairly effectively and getting a more muted rumble but not what i'd consider legal.

that being said at my muted rumble level it's quieter than a lot of the 'farting' cruisers (Harleys, Kwaks etc.). It's just possibly a bit louder than socially acceptable when you batter the throttle - plus whatever i've done to it now seems to have made first gear a little weak.

Rather than blocking off the end with stuff like i have been doing i think i'm going to try sticking two wider baffles - one further up the pipe than the other and playing around with it that way to give it a freer flow. The really good thing about these pipes (apart from the sound which is great) is that there seems to be a wide range of options to run through to customise the sound.

In short, no it's not at a 'legal' or 'legalish' level but it looks like with only a small amount of effort you can get it closer to sociable and with abit more effort i hope to get it spot on.

(some of you may be wondering why bother getting new pipes and then making them legal. For me the answer is simple and in two parts 1). I wanted a change in tone primarily and the option to play with volume rather than a marked increase in volume and 2. Having only passed my test recently if i get more than 6 points in 2 years i lose my licence and have to re-take my test - and i'm unlucky with police sometimes.)

In short, still more than happy with the pipes (though i've been running stock again while commuting). Once i sort the tone/anemic first gear i think they'll be 100% perfect.

Happy to answer any other questions as and when (and more than interested to hear other people's experiences)

Ant

With the second baffle they are actually legal though - you have to remember the BSAU test in this country is fully accredited and legal but is somewhat more lenient than most in Europe so you are fully legal (and the baffle is marked as such) but louder (nicely so as Jesterminute says rather than OTT) than stock
To meet the BSAU test the bike is measured on open flat ground (so no reflected sound) from 7 meters at a 45 degree angle as it drives by in 2nd to 5th gear at 3000-5500 rpm - which is basically very low revs from 21 feet away out doors and then you have to meet 82 dB
These baffles actually do that from 5 meters so are below legal limits but don't confuse stock with legal - they are not stock quiet just legal quiet...

tbh mate it wasn't more than 5 minutes work on my part to add a bit of extra packing and the washer - and that brought the volume down significantly.

bare in mind that i'm ultra ultra sensitive in terms of volume anyway (quiet neighbourhood, back luck and being an new rider) and if as Peter says they're below legal with the inner baffle in then you won't have anything to worry about. I was going to pick up a Decibel reader when we eventually get a bunch of bikes together so we can get some accurate comparisons - when we have it i'll let you know.

To put it another way, the Tridents on mine with minimal packing are still quieter than some of the pipes i've seen on Harleys and the other Jap cruisers. The tone is better though (less farting..or is that my diet).

That being said mate, the proof is in the pudding so if you're ever Midlands way (or if you're going to Dent) look me up and i'll show you with/without packing etc.

to be honest jester i dont want pipes to over the legal limit tried open tors but thought they were a bit loud 91db,saying that as we know legal limit is 80db.This is the question would you say you tridents with legal inserts in are quieter than the triumph off road pipes if they are i think i need to do some grovelling to peter sorrell, and hope that £250 deal is still on.Its a lot of money to save up and best to purchase the right ones first time around. Is the bsau mark visible when baffles fitted?.

Hi all.......just to add my comments to this thread.
I received my pipes today and I’m really pleased with them.
For the moment I’ve decided to go with the 2 baffle arrangement. At idle the pipes are slightly louder than TOR’s, but twist the throttle and these pipes give a real deep growl...NICE
I went for a 30 mile spin today and crossed paths with 2 police patrol units... I wasn’t stopped so no problems with that one.
I’m getting a little popping on deceleration but that’s not a problem for me...I quite like it.
The wife said it sounds like you’ve put a Tiger in the tank (remember the ESSO advert) ........I like Tigers.
Cheers

John

Yep explain please - we've sold around 40 sets of the new ones with no complaints yet - and most people consider it polite to email the vendor with any issues before you slag off a product with no explanation on a forum - that's just rude!

The legal baffles are a well established designed currently on tens of thousands of bikes and have never received a complaint in over 10 years and the street baffle does exactly what is says it will, works properly and whilst it is not the most elegant design it's hidden inside the can so hardly matters what it looks like - what matters is that it works - which it does...

as long as baffles do what there supposed to (tone things down or make good power) who cares what they look like?

what i meant to explain is the baffle is a perforated tube surrounded by packing. When you tighten the bolt up. it all pulls to the left in fact if a cicular plate had bin welded to the end like most exhausts it would not move and also the packing would not start to blow out or gases escape from one side like mine did also the internal legal baffle which fits inside is ok, but will not make any real difference unless you wrap it in packing before you place it inside the other. So i think if they came with a plate at the end you know what i mean circular and a large hole drilled in the middle to let all the gas out then it would keep the packing in place and stop it all moving to the left when you tighten both baffles up together Also fitting instructions and telling people they can use packing around the legal universal decibel eater that was suplied and yes a reciet would be nice would i recommend only if you like loud pipes and dont mind if you loose the packing.

I understand and agree. The baffle should not move to 1 side or compress the packing. It also should not allow gases to escape past it on one side blowing out packing. I have yet to see a set of these so don't know if this is true or not, not doubting anyone just haven't seen it myself and don't want to knock something I haven't seen.

There is no need to over tighten the bolt and draw the baffle over to one side - you can over tighten and damage anything but why would you? The Legal baffle is designed not to have any packing around it - the cones inside it slow the gas and divert it back out in to the second baffle to absorb

If you just put a plate in with a hole you loose so much power it's untrue - that may be why quite a few of the US brands make less power than stock with after market cans - ours add 8 bhp and are legal to BSAU193T3 - what more could you ask

I bought a set of Trident pipes for my 08 TBA and they are AWESOME. Sound fierce, look awesome and make my bike bad a$$
Peter is great to deal with. He answered all my questions really fast-as said before he must not sleep. Shipping was no problem to the States ($75) and they got here quick. Well minus DHL losing the shipping label and holding them for 4 days-nothing at all to do with Trident!!
I've had them on for 2 days and already had 3 comments on how good they sound and how sharp the bike looks. Thanks Peter-keep up the great work.

I took a quick picture with my phone after I put them on, but I'm not real sure how to get a picture posted on here from my computer. The baffles quiet it down and mine worked just fine. One person said they pulled to the left, mine didn't. They install with one screw and slide right into the can. A good set up I think. Convenient and quick. I'm running no baffles right now, and she rumbles at idle and will bark with an open throttle.

no baffle baffled
These are two pics of the Trident pipes looking down with the baffles in and out. I think it's a slick idea and works really well. It took me about 5 minutes to put the baffles in. My girl didn't even know I was gone it was so fast

No baffle

I do have to say I can see how the baffle is pulled to one side instead of a snug fit.

Yeah, after I took the picture I could see what he was talking about. But I'd say nothing a washer or two wouldn't fix. And I'd put a locking washer on there too. But I took them back out, but if I left it I could see where that would work loose. Thanks again Dog for fixing my pics

Scuba Speed, here is a little clip of my Tridents without the baffle in them. They sound deeper/throatier in real life, camera phone video.
