I installed a pair of modded pipes from Don (chevy605) last Tuesday. Just running the bike in the driveway, I loved the sound. Didn't get to take the bike out on the road till yesterday. On the road, they're even better. For me, I couldn't have made a better choice buying 'sound unheard'. Loud enough to keep me smilin' but don't think it will bother the neighbors.

Question - I get popping when decelerating. Haven't decided whether I like it or not. Don instructions say if you don't like it, instal the AI Removal kit. But he's not sure if that's appropriate for the EFI models. Anyone know? I'll ask my dealer, but they aren't open on Mondays so thought I'd ask here in the interim. I'm also going to ask about re-mapping.

One note, for any '08 or '09 owners who might buy Don's pipes. Those 2 years, the heat shield is longer, it hides the pipe clamp. The ones I got from Don were off earlier bikes, so the clamp shows. I don't mind, but others may. Don sent me a pair of stainless ones to replace my stock ones.

Overall

That change to the heat shield must be very recent. The original pipes from my '08 leave the clamps exposed. Sorry, can't help with the AI removal, but I do seem to remember a post here discussing an issue regarding the EFI models. Or maybe it's just the CATs in the pipes, they get clogged if AI is removed. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable on this will comment.

I have two sets of earlier pipes now for my bike. One has only the first two baffles removed, and those are great for longer distances where I would want a less obnixious volume level. They still produce that low rumble at idle. The other set is completely gutted except for the reducer cone at the input and a set of small 4" baffles that I installed. Those are what I use everyday for back and forth to work and short trips. The sound is terrific, much better than the TORs I used previously. Considering the holes you added in the last plate, I suspect your pipes sound about like that.

Keep us posted on how you make out with the pipe & EFI tuning.
I expect many here would like to know.

I installed Don's pipes on my '09 last week and have to say I really like the sound also. I too was getting popping on deceleration as you described. I dropped the bike off at the dealership for her first service, warranty work and a new tune download. I am hoping to get the bike back Wednesday so I will let you know how the re-map of the ecu goes.

I'm sure a remap is in order, that will decrease the popping once the A/F mix is correct. Not sure on FI bikes but on carb bikes some popping is normal for less restrictive exhaust.

I test drove one at the dealership a couple years ago that had short TORS on it. It popped on decel right off the showroom floor.

It popped because it had the short TORs on, they are less restrictive than stock. Also if there is a leak in the exhaust somewhere it will cause popping and backfire possibly.

Ok, haven't done much re: the new pipes yet. Got a bit discouraged after calling tech at dealer where I bought it. He told me I needed to get a custom map from the person selling the pipes (chevy605) if I needed to remap the bike. Said there wasn't a Triumph map applicable.

I few Triumph riders I have since met recommended the tech at the dealer ship in Raleigh, NC. There's a Ton Up Club chapter there, and they supposedly all swear by this guy. My wife and I had occasion to make the 2+ hour drive up there yesterday for something else, so we stopped at the dealership. The Tech was there, so I asked him. He told me it could definitely be done. There are currently 3 maps available for the EFI engine. The stock one, for stock pipes, one for the TORs with AI still installed, and one for the TORs with AI removed. This was the one he recommended for pretty much any after market pipes, and definitely mine. He's familiar with chevy605s pipes. His explanations as to why all seemed to make sense, and were clear were for even a dummy like me to understand.

For the heck of it,, while heading home, I called the dealer in Greensboro, NC (wife was driving) and asked the tech there the same question. I got the same recommendation from him, and in slightly different and a bit more technical terms, got the same reasons why.

So that's the route I'm going to go, as soon as possible. I'll report back after it's done.

Also, as a side note, I've had a couple of other issues with the dealership where I bought the bike. So I'm going to compile some notes, and go have a chit chat with the owner, whom I have met a few times.

Look over the exhaust system very carefully to make sure there are no O2 sensors in the system. If you don't find one (or 2 if the injectors are individually mapped) pulling the air injectors can do no harm and will probably do good.

I've seen these on ebay. Are they louder than the short TORs? I have short TORs and would like something louder. The local dealer here said Air injection removal would take care of the popping. The popping doesn't bother me...

I've personally never heard the TORs, but others have told me that they are louder, including a local rider.He has a Bonnie with the TORs that is dis-assembled for a custom paint job (frame included). When it's back on the road, I'll get a listen then.

I love mine, loud enough for me. Not quite as deep a throaty sound, but that plus the engine beat keeps it from sounding like a HD or a HD clone.
