At least I think that’s what it is. Here’s what happened. I had winterized my bike, stabilizer in the tank I shot some fogging oil into the carbs, removed the battery and filter pods. I stuffed shop rags into the carbs and some rags into the exhaust. I removed the battery and put it on a tender. This is what I do every winter. So, last week I put everything back together and started her up. It was running on one cylinder. The left one was not firing. After it ran a few minutes I gave it some throttle and she started working normally. I went for a ride it stalled as soon as I let the clutch out. I was able to get it to go by slipping the clutch slowly, but no power one cylinder again. I noticed that after I stared rolling if I gassed it she would catch and run normal just like always, plenty of power. But when I stopped she would go back to one cylinder again. Oh, I forgot. She would back fire with the choke out. Not a normal sound more of a real sharp CRACK!
Here’s what I know. There is spark I checked and I even swapped plugs left in the right. I drained all the gas and refilled with new gas. I sprayed some carb cleaner into the left carb to no effect. When it comes to carbs I have never touched mine and I don’t like to mess with something I know nothing about. I need some help.

Well on the surface it sounds to me like you have a blocked pilot circuit. Pull the carbs and start by checking to see if the pilot jet is open. Spray some carb cleaner through the passages. Don't use any wire or anything metal to try and open anything up. You may be able to do the job with the carbs on the bike but I think it would be easier with them off.

Thanks Ian, for some reason I'm hesitant to work on the carbs I don't know why. The valve adjust didn't bother me and it was no problem. With the help of Pat's carb site I will tackle the removal of the carbs and do as you suggest.

Kenny, see I'm just the opposite. I've had these carbs apart dozens of times but I wont tackle the valves. As Clint Eastwood said "mans gotta know his limitations" Good luck I'm sure you'll get her sorted out.

If you can do the valves then the carbs will be a piece of cake, presuming you have the correct info available. Just make sure that you have all of the correct drivers handy before you begin, & you might as well replace the phillips head screws with stainless allen head screws while you are at it.

+1 on replacing the screws. Can get em pretty cheap at True Value.

Hey Ken, I also have adjusted the valves, but never been in the carbs. Told the dealer how I wanted it done, I supplied the jets.
If you pulled off the valve adjust, you can mess with the carbs. Our friend Pat has it all laid out.
Maybe you should host a NJ Tech Day? You make lunch, and friends help with your bike. It's worked for me!

Ken, if I can tackle the carbs, anyone can. Getting them off the bike is not too bad. Getting them back on is somewhat tougher, but definitely doable. Working on them once they're off is easy.

Once the carbs have been off the bike once and the screws replaced with the stainless type, it is much easier to rejet, etc. without removing them from the bike again. Even with the factory airbox in place, i can rejet in about 20 minutes now.

check all the connections to the coils and check all the carb fitting ,vaccume and manifold rubbers for leaks also.

Here's an update: I removed carbs and found a tear in the rubber that connects the left carb to the head. This must be the problem, massive vaccumn leak right? Got a new set of rubber connectors from Doug (Blackdog) blew out the pilot jet with air and put everything back together. start her up and I still have the same problem. left side not firing until it gets revved up. anyone have any ideas what the problem might me?

Do you still have spark to both sides? If yes, you may still have blockage in the pilot circuit of the left carb. Pull the carbs and give 'em a good cleaning. Or host a NJ Tech Day! (Didn't I say that already?)

Follow the pilot jet circuit through the carb.. The two small holes (brass)on the air filter opening end of the carbs (opposite the butterflies)is where the fuel gets from the float bowl into the combustion chamber. One for main , the other for pilot.. make sure you're able to shoot carb cleaner through them and blow them clear with air.

Well I'm just about ready to give up. I did all of the above to no avail. the pilot jet is clear I shot carb cleaner into the little hole on the intake and it came right out of the pilot jet hole. I then blew air thru and it came out with no problem. I inspected the jet and all the little holes are clear. What the heck is wrong? I'm just gonna leave it parked in the garage, and use the Wing until I can figure out what to do.

Maybe it's not a carb problem, but an ignition problem? Could it be a bad coil?

I would consider it but right now I am so poor I can't pay attention. I also have no good place to work like Charlie did. We would have to work in the dirt driveway. I do have a grill and 3 acres though along with some great riding here.

Yes, UC I do have spark. But the left jug does not fire unless I really twist the throttle. I cannot sponsor a tech day (no room) but if you or someone else close enough does I will haul the bike to it on my pickup.

This morning I removed the coils and switched them right on the left and left on right. it had no effect so I guess the coils are good.

Have you gone through the harness and made sure all your connections are clean and tight? Pull each plug connection apart to check for moisture and corrosion, be a good time to grease em too. If not then I would suspect the CDI or coil if only 1 side isn't firing. Also wouldn't hurt to check the pick up coil before you count anything out. You will need a gasket for that and it is a wet cover so some oil will come out.

You definitely have a stuck slide on the side that is only runs when you gap it wide open. I had the exact some problem with mine. Take the carbs off and remove the top of the carb that is malfunctioning. Remove the diaphram/slider and clean any lubricant off of the diaphram. If it is dry and clean, focus on the slider itself.

You definitely have a stuck slide on the side that is only runs when you gap it wide open. I had the exact some problem with mine.
