the winner would depend on the rider.

I don't think the rider would matter that much, especially in a drag race. T-bird 678lbs and 85 hp; R-3 701 lbs. 140 hp. My 88 year old dad on the R-3 could win that race.

I'm thinking along those same lines, eventually buying an older bike. I expect to keep the BA for the long term though, unless the 12K work pizzes me off too much. Then there's the lack of cam bearings, something I wasn't aware of until I'd spent quite a bit of time here on the forum. That's just inexcusable.

I didn't know about the lack of cam bearings either until long after I owned the bike. I think it's inexcusable too. Once that's worn it's either weld up the head and have it line bored again or toss it and buy a new head. Either way it's gonna cost you a small fortune for a repair that should cost about $50 at most.

Well Paul, I think Yota just "might" be referring to some kind of "race" along a stretch of road a little more like THIS HERE...

And THAT DOES "kind'a" depend a whole lot MORE on a rider's abilities in THAT KIND of "race" than just the "ability" to snap open a throttle like I'm sure your 88 y/o daddy COULD probably still do.

(AND, just like Mr.Springsteen once wrote about being blinded by a light..."Mama, THAT'S WHERE the fun is" on these here machines...LEANIN' 'EM into turns and tryin' to find each and every late apex on that road that I can...at least it is for ME, anyways!!!)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Yeah, but it took Manfred Mann to make it a hit...

Uh huh, that's right John.

(...and it also took Manfred Mann's lead vocalist Chris Thompson's garbled enunciation of "revved up like a deuce"[aka: a '32 Ford Coupe] to cause many folks over the years to mis-interpret that as "wrapped up like a douche", TOO, ya know!)

For that twisty piece of pavement neither a R-3 or T-bird would do. Our BA's and SM's would whip their behinds. Of course a Sprint or Daytona would whip ours.

Never be too sure what "fast" looks like or rides. Last year I watch a guy on a VTX 1800 SMOKE 3 Daytonas with "hot shoe" riders for 20 miles on one of our Rat Raids.
All things being equal....but how often is that. We saw the same thing snowmobile racing all the time. It's (almost) always the rider and not the ride.
My frind is a regional Triumph rep and a former sponsored factory racer and the VTX 1800 was the only bike to stay with his Speed Tripple in the twisties. THAT was a real eye opener.

Yota, did you think it was too small for you compared to your SM, since you are around 6'2 or 3?

mmmm...I've read horrible reviews about the VTX series in regard to taking the twisties but can't remember what article it came out of.

The tank is wide & the pegs seem to set back closer to me than my pegs. It felt pretty good to me. I would have liked to have been able to take it for a spin.

Progressives front and rear make a big difference. And at 51 I've learned to not trust too many writers-Alan Cathcart being the exception and only a few others.
