When my dealer says best results, he's referring to checking with a sniffer and dyno. I usually end up richening it up a hair from their settings. If anything my bike is running a little rich. I guess the point my dealer was trying to make is that many people put in much larger mains than they really need. If properly analyzed on a dyno, it's a balance between the mains, needles, pilots, and adjustment screws.
I'd definitely rather be a hair rich than too lean. My bike has never had any blueing trouble and my plugs always are on the dark tan side.
