examining the video closely the only thing accidental about that accident was the driver didn't mean to come out that far. It was a deliberate attempt to stop the bike overtaking. The car had passed the solid centre line and made no attempt to overtake the car in front (some 28ft away) until the bike had manouvred. The car was already correcting it's line before contacting the bike indicating a deliberate swerve there is no way he could not have known the bike was behind at that distance for that length of time... the speed limit on that road would have been ( I assume)80kph (this from the car reg number, country of origin...) though yes the bike was far too close for those road conditions.

"Accidents" like this happen a lot in the peak district over the summer, idiot drivers (cagers) complemented by inexperienced riding style (call it)... The result is the local council now have to "take measures" by law... This is why most of our local roads now between the police, cameras, and idiots, are not worth riding so aggressively... He'll not be doing that again...

Ya know what? I just changed my mind. The red car's blinker comes on to pass and you can see the shadow of the car he's passing just before he pulls out. The bike was at (mostly) fault. I say mostly because the car should've signaled longer before pulling out to pass. The signal and the pass was virtually simultaneous.

Horse poo. While driving or riding, you should pay attention to what is going on around you instead of just trusting that your blinker will magically make everything go away.

That red car swerved out into the path of the bike then right back in it's own lane, if it had been avoiding a car in front then it would have crashed. That car swerved to block the bike, I don't think it meant to cause the bike to crash but went too far out by mistake and caused the accident. (giving the benefit of the doubt here)

Okay guys! HERE'S what REALLY happened there...

The driver in the red car didn't see the biker who was in his BLIND SPOT as he attempted to overtake the car, because the driver(like it seems MOST morons out there behind the wheel these days haven't seemed to have been taught to or have learned) FAILED to SWIVEL his freakin' head for a second and CHECK his friggin' BLIND SPOT before he attempted to change lanes and pass what DEFINITELY appears to have been a car in front of HIM!

THAT'S your answer RIGHT THERE!!! And so, what say we holster them thare shootin' irons here, guys!

(OR, of course it could be that a "magic bullet" was shot from that "grassy knoll" just off to the right there, and it hit BOTH the cager AND the biker as this whole thing went down!!!)

Well, if you're talkin' about my FIRST "theory" there Ian, I'd say that it makes total sense to ME, anyway! Because, my BASIC "theory" about stuff like this is that EVERYBODY'S a freakin' MORON out there behind the wheel, and are likely to do ALL KINDS of thoughtless acts, but VERY VERY FEW of those morons are likely to pull these kinds of things ON PURPOSE!!! And I feel that "theory" ALONE has keep me in one piece for over 40 friggin' years while I've been ridin' these babies in this automobile-saturated town known as Los Angeles California.

(but IF you're talkin' about my SECOND "theory" there, then I'd have to say that if Oliver Stone ever makes a movie about this here accident, I'd think THAT moron would probably screw up the FACTS about this accident TOO!!!)

No , I mean the guy may not have looked pulling out intending to pass or go around the guy in front of him. That is possible, seen it happen more than I care to think about. Luckily I never saw it actually take the bike down but close. Again giving benefit of the doubt. I still think it was intentional.

Yeah. That's it, alright!

Yep! "Maybe" there was a "Goombah" drivin' that red car, and he was thinkin' somethin' like...."I'm not lettin' ANY biker pass ME! And when I get to the next town, if ANY of those jerks try to LANE SPLIT past me, I'm REALLY gonna go after THEM!!!"

The driver of the vehicle has a motorcyclist following in clear view of the rear mirror for some distance. As the motorcyclist moves to pass he is now no longer directly in the driver's rear view mirror. The driver of the vehicle immediately assumes that the motorcyclist has been abducted by aliens and the road is clear.

Really? Rider down and possibly hurt, motorcycle down and most likely damaged.

i am temted to believe that if that bike had loud pipes that there would have been no excuse for the cage driver. just another fine example of "loud pipes save lives" but i guess if he did it on purpose then nothing could have been done. the thing is that when you ride you have to always expect the unexpected, like Dwight said, it has kept him alive for 40+yrs driveing in L.A.

And I'm not sold on the "Loud Pipe Theory" EITHER, newt!

Do you remember Eddy's story around here about our encounter with that guy ridin' that really cool old Pan/Shovel( and LOUD) Chopper who tried to pass us in my truck while we were on that twisty mountain road in Arizona recently! Well, I heard him comin' up behind us alright, HOWEVER, as he made that boneheaded move to pass us on that blind left sweeper and just before he crashed that cool old machine right in front of us, I momentarily lost sight of him as he started to pass us and I had to swivel my head to see where he was at and what he was doin' when I couldn't see him in either of my rearview mirrors.

(...and at the same time said to Eddy, "What's THIS friggin' moron doin' here, HUH???!!!)

More clarification of the dynamics in play here:

The moron in the red car was asshugging the car in front of him. He was so close that we never see that car, only it's shadow.

Because of his close proximity to the car in front of him, he was concentrating on not hitting the car in front and so never checks his mirrors, or if he does he doesn't see the moron on the bike who is asshugging him.

Since said moron on bike is also in the moron in the car's blind spot, the moron in the car never sees the moron on the bike with a quick head check (if he even bothers, which I doubt because he was so close to the car in front of him he couldn't afford the split second that it would take).

Now bike moron decides to pass car moron and the car in front of him.
Car moron decides to pass car that he has been asshugging at about the same time that bike moron is passing him, or perhaps the driver of the unseen car has had it with the asshugger and slows down to encourage him to pass or hits the brakes to ****** him off.

Conclusion: Crash is the result of two morons attempting to occupy the same space at the same time.

Moral is still the same.
DON'T FRIGGIN' TAILGATE
And stay clear of those who do.

(At least I think that's what my mouse said, his accent is terrible )

Tell your mouse for me that I think he's wise beyond his years, Bill!

('cause evidently HE KNOWS that ALMOST WIHOUT EXCEPTION "it takes TWO TO TANGLE" out there on the road, AND that the guy on the BIKE is ALWAYS going to get the WORST of it!!!)

Bingo! Unlike the driver of the vehicle in the video, you did not assume that the motorcycle had magically disappeared the instant the rider was no longer visible in your rear view mirror.

Ahem..."Mr.Cobb". Please read Bill's "mouse's" explanation above about how the cager in the red car was tailgating the car in front of him, and thus lacked the necessary time in order to swivel his head and check his blind spot and thus, because said cager can not drive BOTH his car AND ALSO be RESPONSIBLE for riding the biker's motorcycle which was about to pass HIM, that...well...there is MUCH MORE here that COULD HAVE, and probably DID come into play in this whole scenario.

Just to throw a little more fuel on the flames...

It is ALWAYS the vehicle behinds fault (in the UK anyway)
You should ALWAYS read the road ahead and expect the unexpected.
THEY are out to get you and will leap in front of you without warning like lemmings!

Ride safe ;-)

EXCELLENT point there, Mark!

I guess it's kind'a like the flip-side of Bill's "mouse" being able to see the "Bigger Picture" here, and that it's NOT ALWAYS ALL the "cager's fault" in these kinds of things.

The "flip-side" being that "LEMMINGS"(as compared to MICE, evidently) will almost always say AFTER something like THIS all goes down..."Gee! I'm sorry Officer, but I didn't SEE the motorcycle!" BUT, that's STILL no excuse for the "unseen" motorcyclIST to often SET himself UP for this kind of outcome!

One of the things I've learned in my time navigating the concrete slab maze in medium to heavy traffic at or above the suggested maximum speed is that if you see someone's brake lights on/off, on/off constantly, it's probably an asshugging moron. Back away so that you have time to steer clear of the flying pieces when the collision happens.

Same jerks as we have here that open the door if going down the shoulder to get around a traffic jam or do exactly what that red car did. Big trucks are especially likely to cut a bike off on purpose while going around a traffic jam. It is even legal to use the shoulder in PA as long as you do it safely. Some cops will try and ticket you for it but it is actually legal.

Well then Ian, it sounds to ME that you folks back East just need to have a little "Goobah-ectomy" done back there!!!

YEP! Maybe IF some of THOSE kind'a morons who would purposely "open a door" on ya as you'd be lane-splittin' down a CONGESTED ROAD might somehow "disappear", and/or WISE the **** UP that it ACTUALLY DECREASES congestion and ACTUALLY gets THEIR butt to it's destination quicker TOO, and ISN'T "un-safe", THEN MAYBE you folks back East will one day be able to "live in a hightened sense of motorcycling existence", just like WE DO out here in the land of sunshine and no salted roads...AND evidently...MORE COURTEOUS DRIVERS!!!!

(but I'm guessin' that you better NOT hold your breath for THAT to happen back there any ol' time soon, huh?!)

Uh huh, Derek. Of COURSE I read, AND RE-read them ALL!!!

(the re-readin' part is mostly to check for mis-spellings and gramatical errors, you understand)

And frankly(my dear...to channel an old matinee idol of the 1930s and 1940s) I don't give a...err...allow me to rephrase that here a bit.....

And even THOUGH this thread IS somewhat ironically entitled "How to make friends", I've never been one to bow to accepted "protocol" when it comes to "callin' 'em as I sees 'em"! And IF you would per chance take the time to RE-read a few of my posts again, I THINK you may find that I almost without exception make a VERY valid point about the "human condition" within all the sardonic-laced verse.

(but don't worry about it too much, amigo...trust me, you, like so many others around here it seems, will eventually get used to my "coded" messages here at BA.com!)

Fat Tire, or any of the other Belgium Brewing Co beers is just fine, Guiness, not so much. I'm hoping for next year. It's only like 1300 miles if I remember correctly from when I looked it up long ago.

edit:1450 miles

Oh yeah, Dwight reads his post and knows exactly what he says when he says it. He may not mean it but knows exactly what he says and for what effect he said it. (I really like that guy)

Watch the movie and focus on the shadow one time and you will see Bill is right. But watch it again and focus on the speedo. Now on a two lane road this guy accelerates from about 45MPH or 70KPH ish to 70 MPH in about 2 seconds.

If that car in front looked rear and saw nothing then pulled out the exact same thing would have occurred.

This guy really twisted up the throttle when he started the pass. Nobody expects you to increase your speed by more than 50% in a second or two. Accidents happen, they come from mistakes or judgment errors. They are not always shooting events. I need to re-phrase that. Unless drunk or intentional, they are not shooting events.

One post here simply makes me cringe.

Get em Dwight! you can swing this jury, I know you can.

Well thanks for the support there, Ron!!! Those are some nice words there alright!

But, I KNOW what you're really up to here! You're REALLY shootin' for a few extra Fat Tire Ales at this year's SWTF, AREN'T ya??? But, don't worry. I don't blame ya at all!!!

(and so, let's see...at last count here we have 5 to convict AND 6 to acquit...AND it looks like Ian over there is playin' tic-tac-toe by himself on HIS ballot!!!)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)
