hidden fuel filter, i just went through the same thing last week Quote:
For the past couple of weeks, my bike has been choking out on the highway, and generally running bad at high rpms. Not so much around town, but when I hammer it, she wants to sputter and cough. I had the carbs off several weeks ago to make some changes, which didn't work out, so the I put them back on and went for a ride. After about 90 miles, it started to act like it was dry, so I switched to reserve and made it to a gas station. Filled up and took the interstate home. Still acting like no fuel. Seems a little weird, since there had been no problems before this. So I adjusted the idle mix screws, thinking maybe that would fix it, since it was popping a lot. Rode out to my dealer, had him test ride it, of course no problems on the test ride. Before he rode it, he drained the bowls thinking maybe water in the fuel. So I head home, and just like before, after I hit 64-65 mph, it starts choking again. Now I'm just hoping it's not the CDI, because I can't afford a new one right now. I get home and decide to check the in line filter. Pull the carbs, off with the fuel line, there it is. I pull it out, and there is some chum and crud in it, nothing out of the ordinary for a 7 year old bike, except wait, there it is, what the?!?! A big piece of cotton or fur or a dandelion or whatever in the filter, so I get a small allen key to get it out, and before I can inspect it, it just blows away in the wind. I clean out the filter and put it on the shelf for later, connect everything back up and go for a ride. Flawless! It's been a few hundred miles since then (Thursday), and everything seems to be just fine. I'm relieved it wasn't the ignition! Screwed in the mix screw again, and all is well. I should have checked the filter first, but wasn't totally convinced that was the problem, especially since in all the times I had the carbs off, I don't remember seeing it there.

Always remember to be yourself. Unless you suck. Then pretend to be someone else.
