While driving home from work, a tire crossed the median and hit my car head on. I can only assume that it came off a trailer. Because it was at dusk, I only caught a glimpse of it, then wham! It took out the front bumper, hood, condenser and radiater. Thankfully, I wasn't on my bike . After the trooper wrote up the report, he drove up the interstate to check if anyone had pulled over and was missing a tire. Haven't heard from the police dept. on that. I was fully expecting my wife to give "that motorcycle and that would have been the end of you" speech, but she hasn't. I don't see how anyone could prepare for a freak incident like this, just add it to the road hazard list. Just be careful out there.

Wendy and I were along side a tractor trailer when the tire exploded. We were on our bikes. We got very lucky though, only a few small chunks hit us. No injury or damage just a little stinging where the stuff hit.

Many, many years ago when I worked on Lee Street in Greensboro, NC we heard a loud bang/crash from the road out front while in our shop. When we looked out a single tire went blazing by the front door at 30 or 40 mph and center-punched a Cadillac head on. Turned out the local tire shop hadn't tightened the lugs.

Well Eddie, I hope you now realize that driving while you're "tired" can be very very dangerous! Yep. Looks like you had to learn THAT lesson the hard way, huh?!

(sorry, I couldn't resist that one...glad you're okay)

Had a similar incident in a passenger van full of people. We heard a thumping noise but before we pulled over it stopped.A few seconds later a tire passed us. The driver didn't know it was ours until we went to get off the exit ramp a short time later since the weight of all the people kept the van on the other 3 wheels for a short time.

How long did it take you to realize the tire you saw was yours?

P.S. I almost forgot one difference with what happened to me was our tire came off the rim, our rim was still on the van.

Look on the bright side. If you were on your bike, you probably would have seen the tire coming!

Trust me, I've gone over this scenario a hundred times in my head. Perhaps I would have missed it. At least that's what I'm trying to convince myself of.

Hope the cops find out whose tire it was, might make insurance claim easier. Glad you weren't hurt!

Many years ago I was a small child in the back of the family car. We were going down a steep hill and a wheel passed the car. My Father shouted "Look some idiot has lost a wheel" then the back of the car hit the road... it was a real comedy moment and luckily no one was hurt.

I lost a wheel once....
It was the last race of the season at the now closed Raceway Park in Blue Island,IL. Earlier in the race I had taken a hit to the driver's quarter. Last lap, headed towards the finish line coming out of turn 4, I see a wheel passing me up..."What the F.....???? why is my car slowing down.... Oh sh....". Had enough momentum to cross the finsih line on 3 wheels and a backing plate. Broke all the studs right off the axle, Ground the backing plate down to the mounting flange, don't know what happened to the brake drum.

Glad you were OK. A car crashing into the windshield would have been terrifying (as if it probably wasn't already). Two years ago, along I-81 a big truck lost a wheel. It travled over an 8' fence, exit cloverleaf and into a shopping center before crashing thru the window of a crowded IHOP. Amazingly, no one was hurt. They did find the truck in this instance. Hope they do for your sake so they take care of your repairs.

A carload of highschool girls were killed on HWY40 here in St. Louis by an 18-wheeler's wheel/tire going through the windshield. It's scary we share the road with these things. We are practically helpless in their shadow.

Years ago, there was a hole in the wall beer joint called The Caves across Valley Blvd from the railroad tracks. One day, a thump was heard and a truck (wheel assembly) from a freight car was against the door. Bar tender called Southern Pacific and was told to start a tab and serve drinks at the railroad expense untill they were able to remove it.

Very scary stories kids. I've also witnessed what a runaway tire does to a vehicle.

You just can't be prepared enough for that kind of freak accident. Ride safe guys.

When I was a kid (18 or so) I was out with a buddy. It was around 2:00 AM and he was driving a 1970 Buick GS Stage-1 455. He had punched it going down a deserted business street, hit third gear and the right rear tire broke loose (from the car, broken lugs) passed us at a high rate of speed and headed straight for the huge plate glass display windows of a high end stereo and TV store.
I had visions of broken glass, TVs, stereos and talking to police.
Somehow, it hit the divider pillar between two windows and bounced back.

Last year there was a similar incident in Milwaukee where a rogue tire went through the windshield of an oncoming car, killing him. Be careful out there.

I nearly got collected by a loose wheel coming off a car while walking along the footpath many years ago - if I hadn't seen it come off the car and come rolling toward me I'd never have been able to dodge it. It mounted the kerb and bounced straight past me at head height and into a brick fence, knocking a large section of it down. You don't need to be riding to be killed by a stray wheel.

Now that I'm forced to break the self imposed 40 degree rule, riding to work when it's 30 degrees is an experience!
My core is fine, but my toes and fingers are three shades of blue. Even with snow gloves and hippo hands installed.

Can't think of a witty comeback. Since my car is out of commision, I'll have to ride to work regardless of weather temps. Thankfully, it's suppose to be in the upper 70's later this week.
