The airgap is easy to check/adjust.
It helps to have a Shop Manual.
Remove the right side engine case.
At about the 11 o'clock position on the rotor, you'll see the sensor.
A couple spots on the rotor stick up higher than the rest.
These are the triggers. Align one of them under the sensor and get out your feeler gauges.
The gap should be 0.8mm.
leave the bike on the sidestand instead of using a bike lift
and you won't lose any oil.

But, unfortunately, it sounds like your ignitor.
If you have a mate with an BA or Speedy, swap ignitors w/him
to see if your problem goes away.
