Does anyone out there know the best way to hook up an auxiliary electrical device, like a GPS, to the console of one of our bikes. I do not really want to hardwire it straight to the bat.
05 TBA
Thanks.

I am putting mine on in a couple of weeks and wondered about taking the power from inside the headlght somewhere. It will be fused at 2 amp seperate.
Any suggestions a this may also help bobcat as ell as me.

yes, the aux plug is what I am thinking. How do you wire a GPS power wire into the aux plug?

It sounds like you are looking for a very clean wiring look. The cheap and easy way could be using the aux plug (cig ligher socket) with a car adapter for your GPS. I plan on using the connection from my Battery Tender and a cig ligter adapter plug and car plug to power the accesories. Not as clean as what you are thinking but functional and economic.

if it's the only add-on thing you have then I would recommend running it back to the battery with the fuse they supply for the sake of minimal interference with anything else. I have a bunch of stuff so I have a relay and distribution block under my seat.

Ah I get it now. I could get a powerlet adapter to fit into the auxiliary outlet on the bike and plug the GPS power cable into it.

....Install a Battery Tender harness pemanently to the battery. Plug end tucks up under seat. Buy a second harness, cut off the end and solder to the GPS wires. Feed GPS wire under tank and seat till it plugs into BT plug. Put a 1 amp fuse in the line. Now you have a live GPS connection or a Battery Charger set up.

Be careful, I was going to wire mine direct to the battery then I looked at the 12 volt power plug and saw that the output to the GPS is only 5 volts.
Yes! I am a Redneck. Any Problems?

I have always run mine to the back of the auxiliary power socket. You can buy double 90 degree connectors (Radio shack in the US). Just push them on the power socket, reconnect the plug from the bike wiring harness and conect the leads from the GPS to the connectors. That way when you stop for gas or whatever you don't have the GPS shut down and have to reboot, as the power socket is 'hot' all the time.

geez, I dunno, could it be a 5A fuse? 12V is pretty typical.

If you use the power cord that comes with most GPS's and run it down the spine of the frame to the auxliary socket it will be hardwired, most power cords with the units have a in line fuse.

Reads Input: 12/24v Output: 5v 2amp
Maybe its just TomTom.
