I'm posting this under a new topic because it's not quite the same thing as my earlier question about the rear brake wearing out. I had a chance to inspect the rotor today, and I've decided it can be reused without turning. One side has been roughed up a little, but it's within the limit of what I consider acceptable for pad replacement. The rotor isn't actually grooved, and that's what I was worried about most. Regarding the pads, I don't have a service manual, and this looks somewhat different than I'm used to. Also, after hearing all the warnings about Loctite, I want to be sure I don't break or strip anything. In the photo below, hex bolts #1 hold the caliper to the bracket. I've already removed them (and the caliper) during a trial attempt, but it's not clear to me how to remove the old pads. There's a spring clip at the top somewhere, but that's obviously not the only thing holding them. Do I remove the allen screws #2 to free the pads?  I also need to ask about the front. I think the hex bolts #3 in the photo below are all that's holding the caliper to the fork. What else has to be done to free the pads?   THANKS!!

Yes, you have to remove the allen screws. It's easier to break them loose before you remove the caliper. As for the front, the little deal that looks like a standard screw is actually a plug which hides an allen screw if i remember correctly. I'm working from memory on that but i'm sure a couple of folks will chime in if i'm wrong. Heck, they'll even chime in if i'm not wrong!  Just wait and see...

Yep, what he said. Same type of allen screw or "guide pin", if you will, under that screw plug. Only one on the front.
They are what the pads "ride" on. Loosen them before you remove the calipers - mucho easier.
And if that screw cover is as tight as mine was, drill it, easy-out it, and find a rubber plug or something to cover the hole. If it does come out, antisneeze it.

Do you mean the black, slotted screw on the right side of the caliper (looking at it from the front)? Is that threaded in or just a press fit?

Yeah, that's the one. It screws out. Use a good screwdriver.

OK then, this looks like a 20 minute job. Hey, Fast Eddy e-mailed yesterday to say he was shipping the pads same day by Priority Mail. That's really great service (and a great price, too)! Thanks for everyone's help on this!
