Thanks for the input guys. I live on the second floor facing the street here, and the covered parking area is at the rear of the buildings. The neighborhood is safe enough that stroller moms are out on our street during the day, but their have been some autos broken into lately. If I parked a bike out front I could see it from most of my windows, but it would be on the street with nothing solid to chain it to. The parking area is under a canopy with very solid supports to which a bike could be chained, but it is far from my direct observation and adjacent to empty buildings that are scheduled for demolition. (new hospital construction) Beyond is the freeway service road, so there are few eyes/ears in that direction.
I have been considering modifying a centerstand so that it could be locked into position. Maybe matching tabs on both the stand and frame through which the shackle of a lock could be passed. Hard to quietly push a bike down the lane while its on its centerstand.
