I asked this before, went back and searched and couldn't find a definitive answer. What are the front and rear sprockets on current stock 865 bikes? I had heard 18/42 and can see the rear sprocket is a "42" but can't find any data as to what counter sprocket is standard.
If it is 18/42, why doesn't Triumph offer a 18/42 chain & sprocket kit? Anyone with first hand knowledge?

Bob, I'm sure my '02 America is a 17 tooth counter with the 42 rear. I installed a 18 tooth counter for a while but went back to the 17. The Speedy should be 16/42.

Dennis, my 05 America was 17/42 also and the Speedys were 16/42 then and before. But, I think in 06 or 07 after they all were 865s they eventually went to 18/42 as Z's above. You would think they would make a chain/sprocket kit that would be a new stock replacement but I can't find it anywhere.

Bob, Hermy's TriumpheStore shows a chain and sprocket kit for the America (A9618015)and the SM (A9618019). The picture shows an 18t gear. I know that's not proof positive, but you might send them an email and ask if they have a p/n for the kit you're looking for. I have a brand new 18t Triumph sprocket I bought off of ebay, but it doesn't have a p/n on it. Just 18T and 525.....

Don't get me started...been trying to get the correct "sprocket kit" from my local dealer now for nearly a month...The first attempt on my order, I was sold a "JH" rear sprocket, and "BikeMaster" chain, after promise was made to have all parts here on certain date. Promised date arrived, front sprocket did'nt show, and the rear bolt pattern was way off. Re-ordered the "Triumph" kit, arrived yesterday, but had a 16 tooth front sprocket. Still trying to get the right parts for my bike...Un frikkin believable..

JT sprockets they list for our bikes are wrong, I let them know two years ago and they don't seem to care they are for a Thruxton or Bonnie.
That is why I went with my current supplier and have it spot on match chain and sprockets. They just don't have them in steel because Sun has it locked out. Or some proprietary issue and rears are in Aluminum.

My '04 America came to me with a 17/42. I changed the front to an 18T and like enough that I won't be changing back; I believe I'd like it even better if I had a D&D 904...

Deon, I think they used the same picture for both kits. I counted the teeth also. Triumph has made a kit for America and Speedmaster since the Speedy came out but they were 17/42 America and 16/42 Speedmaster - same as the bikes were originally.
If they changed to 18/42, they should have a third kit for after the change year.

Well, that's why I suggested sending them an email or calling them. They're good people. If they show an 18t in the picture, I would think they would have the correct p/n for the kit.
And btw, the correct JT rear sprocket for our bikes is a JTR1332. Fits an 03 anyway.

Deon, You are correct, Parts Unlimited who most dealers use has the wrong part number listed and didn't correct it.
That is a error on my post, JT does have the correct number.

I have had all three on my Speedy (16,17,18), and just decided last night I'm going back to the 16t next time.
I like them all, but at 80mph, I can't get into the higher revs without really busting the speed limit - and she really runs soo sweet up there!
I have time before another chain/sprocket change due, so I'm going to play around in 4th gear a while and see what that's like.
Running the 17t now, and I know I won't be going back to the 18t, even though I had some reservations about dropping from it bak to the 17t at the time.
They're all good!

The most dissappointing thing to me, is that our own TRIUMPH dealers do not know enough about their own product to be able to help us or answer these questions. I blame some of that on the fact that most dealers carry multiple brands of bikes - mine carries TRIUMPH and BMW for instance.
It is a bit of a challenge trying to be patient and understanding while at the counter talking to a parts guy that knows so little about our bikes. Thanks to this forum and all of our input, we really are better experts than the dealer - at least in most instances I suspect.
I have learned that I can save an aweful lot of gas and aggravation if I need a part by looking it up here, and sometimes finding it on BikeBandit, before I go to the dealer - at least then I can direct my part man (or woman) to the correct exploded diagram and point out the part I need. Paint by numbers.......
I can not count the times I have been in the dealer's and overheard a question from another customer that the counter people could not answer or find an answer to. I can usually tell them what they need to know and then direct them to this forum, the tech vault, Brent's NewSpeedmaster.com, Fast Eddy's, etc. and get them pointed in the right direction.
It seems the dealer should be the expert, but I work on that side of the coin at the Lexus dealership.....we have the same attitude - but not many of my customers come in armed with info. about their car the way we arm ourselves with info. about our bikes. (I hope they stay "un-armed" for my safety's sake!)
Our worst enemy at the shop is the customer who has all sorts of aftermarket parts on their car, and yet wants us to sort out what somebody else screwed up. No question that in terms of ignition, brake, and suspension parts, using Genuine Lexus Parts makes my technicians a lot more willing to work on one's car. They see aftermarket parts and the car suddenly has a "stigma" and no one wants to touch it. Or they want to change all the parts back over and start from there.

I've had a big hassel trying to get a rear sprocket... Twice I've been sent the wrong one by my dealer, the 1st had 6 holes and the 2nd had 5 but still didn't fit... It's been 9 weeks now so I ain't to happy with them, am I the 1st person in NZ to wear out a set or what, now waitin on OME part from England... 44,000km and that chain was stuffed, couldn't adjust anymore and wearing on the swingarm, when I cut it off I laid it on the ground and pulled the end link to measure stretch, 2 1/4 links it moved. could bend it sideways 180 degrees to make a U... Yep, 9 weeks, it's summer and I just wanna ride...

Why do our TRIUMPH dealers not want to sell us OEM parts???? Mine has tried to get me to go aftermarket both times I went to them for chains/sprockets. This last time, I felt the sprockets were okay, so I did go chain only from another manufacturer - so far so good, no problem. But when I want sprockets, I don't want any headaches.

I don't mind paying a little extra for a Triumph complete kit and would probably prefer it. You get the 2 sprockets, chain, and a new lock washer for the counter sprocket. Now finding the correct number for a 18/42 kit............
