I have am 06 America w/ 12k on it. How crucial is it to do the valve adjustment now. Do I need to balance carbs as well?

I didn't do my valves until almost 16,000 if I remember right. I know it was way over due. They were all still OK although they did need to be done. Balancing is up to you.

yes. whenever you mess with throughput you need to check the carburators balance. while adjusting the valves may or may not be needed, checking the clearances is prudent. checking clearances is a lot less involved than re-shimming.

Get a manual,or better yet go to Dinqua's web site. and metric feeler guages are a must to get an accurate reading.

Good metric feeler gauges and a good micrometer, metric would be better but the shim calculator includes a conversion calculator.
