If you can aford it,the 989 stroker is the best kit of the bunch.Check out the increase in torque over the other kits plus the hp isnt bad either.I installed a 904 kit in my Speedmaster and the difference was amazing but i still would like more torque.I run a 19 tooth sproket and lost a little stoplight acceleration but made it a pleasure to ride long distance and made it smoother with the throttle response.Would never think about going back to the 17 tooth but would like a little more torque and the 989 would be the ticket.

Yeah, a 989 would work, but it looks like for only about $7000.00, you could have a 1200cc monster with like 10 or 15 more horses... I'll pass!

yeah...once you have to crack the case its all over. The $$ go up and the work seems to be similar. So according to BPs link there anything over the 904 involves cracking the case and if your going that far why stop at a 989 when you can go 1200. I hate being OCD Has anyone taken an 865 and gone up to a 904? Is it worth it or not?

I guess it would depend on how much you like Triumph and willing to do to have the best air-cooled parallel twin on the road. Its like those guys that would spend big bucks on hot rodding a V W van.Makes no sense to most people except the person doing the mods.

i'll eventually go the 1100 rout. stock stroke so no need for the 3k crank

I believe anything over the 904 piston size would be a little risky until theres more feedback on them on the road as far as longevity goes.Larger pistons means more weight, heat, and bigger clearences of the piston and rings which means more piston slap and oil burning until it warms to operatin temp. When i installed my 904 i thought the pistons were the wrong size because of the needed clearences of an air cooled motor.Just my 2 cents worth

that may be what I do years on down the road, with those nice billet cylinders.

For anyone interested, Fast Freddy is in the process of testing 10.5:1 compression pistons for the 865 right now, I think when I spoke to him last he had at least 100 sets to sell. That was a few weeks ago, and he told me he was going to try and destroy the motor to see if the pistons will hold up, he seemed pretty confident that they will last. Sounds like a very affordable upgrade with no machine work to deal with, pretty much drop in new pistons and go.

I'm planning on calling Freddy this afternoon, I will post more info on the high comp 865 pistons when I hear from him.
