Now wait a minute there, Wade! I seem to recall that Brando NEVER thought fins were a "horror", dude! NOPE!!!

In FACT, in his early years you may recall he developed quite an appreciation for fins on motorcycles while riding a 1952 Triumph Thunderbird in another particularly noteworthy film in which he starred.

Proving, once again, that ALL machines bearing the hallowed name of Triumph Thunderbird SHOULD HAVE cooling fins, be they air OR water-cooled.

(BTW...I say lets add an early '50s Thunderbird to this list here....THOSE are some good lookin' machines TOO, ya know!)

Thought that movie was made in 53 and he was on a 54 T-110. ( New bike before they hit the show rooms.)

Oh boy! Here we go with another model-year debate again, huh Ian?!

(to be honest with ya, I'm not sure...you COULD be right...THIS TIME!!!)

was there ever any doubt?

( I am really not sure but that is how I remember it)

That bike must have the mag/gen combo unit on it. It has the old style primary with the small tear drop in front instead of the larger bulge where the gen would be on later models and also has no gen. in front of the jugs through the mount plates. The unit behind the jugs is also mounted higher than a std. mag. Very good looking bike but still like the Speedtwin better.

Well Dave, if one can get past the bubblegum-color paint on those babies, I don't think the word "ugly" in ANY manner would or should ever be uttered in any sentence that describes those BEAUTIFUL and INNOVATIVE motorcycles.

(you see, I ALMOST posted a picture of a Britten in this thread myself, but I figured you guys probably already knew that I think John Britten's creation is the Holy Grail of motorcycles, as I've made mention of this many many times over the years on this website, ya know)

Dwight,
I don't understand... The britten is the Holy Grail of motorcycles????? But the Confederate is an industrial monstrosity ?????

I mean c'mon, I see a lot of "industrial" under all that gawd awful hypercolor plastic.

Now WAIT a minute here fellas!

First, Stew. You're gonna sit there at that keyboard o' yours and tell me that that Erector-Set lookin' Confederate motorcycle looks like it'll cut through the wind as well as the Britten with that gorgeous FLOWING bodywork on it? HUH?! The Britten hasn't a square surface to be found anywhere on it! That's called "aerodynamic", ya know!

(but once again, you'll have to LOOK PAST that bubblegum-colored paint if it's not to your liking, through I always did like MY Bazooka Joe, for whatever THAT'S worth here!)

AND, as much as the Confederate is "outside-the-box thinking" incarnate, it pales in comparison to the innovations that that Kiwi genuis Britten came up with on his machine. Remember the Britten has NO FRAME. everything us bolted directly to the HOME-DESIGNED and HOME-MADE engine. AND, this baby ALSO came out of nowhere and BEAT the best established motorcycle brands and their racers at Daytona.
(there's ya a "pedigree to greatness" RIGHT THERE!!!)

And Ian...just because you're not crazy about modern race/sport motorcycles, doesn't mean that they can not be looked on as beautiful machines in their own right, ya know. Not ALL "beautiful motorcycles" have to look like a 1938(that's RIGHT, I said 1930-EIGHT ) Speed Twin, ya know!!!

I don't like them or anything like them. Doesn't matter how fast they are or how well they run to me. They could be given to me and all I would do is sell them as fast as possible and buy something I like. I love my old BMW and it is painfully slow but a great bike to ride. When I say slow I mean it lacks HP. If I remember the numbers it makes like 28 hp at 5600 RPM but once you get that rubberband wound up it will hold 80mph on the highway all day long and not even break a sweat just takes some time to get there.

Yeah! Good point, Thanassis! And both are actually based on the old girder parallelogram system front ends, kind of like what are holding the front wheels of those two old Triumphs above...except the Britten's is made of carbon-fiber, ya know.

I guess it's as they say..."There truly IS nothing new under the sun"...except that BEAUTIFUL BRITTEN MOTORCYCLE, of course.

(BTW T-Man...I think the REAL reason Ian doesn't like Sportbikes is because they don't have KICKSTARTERS on 'em!!!)

Listen, Dwight. I wasn't knocking the Britten (aside from the color). I just didn't understand how one is a thing of beauty and the other is a monstrosity.....and I still don't.

When it comes to selecting 2nd bikes or 3rd or 4ths. I find it is an impossible choice. There are just to many truly beautiful and outstanding pieces of machinery out there. I can think of many bikes from BMW, Ducati, Moto Guzzi, Laverda, all the British makers, even some old Harleys i would dearly love to park in my garage. If i was to win the lottery tomorrow i would probably spend the rest of my life hunting for beautiful motorcycles. And the sad thing is, there would always be one more bike to find.

Well Stew, maybe it's just me then. Maybe, just as Ian can not seem to appreciate modern sportbikes, maybe I just can not seem to appreciate what I call this "Deconstructed/Post Modern" look.

However in MY defense, where as old Deco-styled streamlined motorcycles of the past, such a those old '30s Triumphs above, AND modern Sportbikes BOTH look like they slice through the wind, this new "Post-Modern" look doesn't look all that aerodynamic. Yep! And I have the same feeling about those squared-off and "chock-a-block/industrial" looking SUVs out there too.

(I guess I'm just "Old School" enough to still think that VEHICLES that MOVE through air masses should look AT LEAST a LITTLE aerodynamic)

John Britten made a MotoGP bike a decade before they had the MotoGP.

Actually I think, if the company makes it, the Victory Kingpin has fabulous styling. Old school metal and modern drive line. The combination fit and finish IMHO makes this a contender.

It's funny about Victory, isn't it? Their owners are totally devoted to them kind of like Saturns are in the auto world, yet I just can't warm up to them (either brand) as I find them to be clunky in their presentation. This the first one I've seen that didn't look like a pair of "sensible shoes":

I was waiting for you to post those Speedtwin shots Ed, Love that bike!

Dwight I just don't like they way sport bikes look or the position you have to sit in to ride one. Just a matter of taste. I didn't mean to knock them for those who like them, each to their own. I still wish my SM was a kick start bike! Only bike I ever owned that wasn't.
