Its not illegal its just not the legal size required. 
Keep them guessing, 
as long as it can be seen and read from a reasonable distance they seem to be fine. The main problem is the ones that the numbers and letters are missrepresented or done in a stupid italic script that can't be read.
Not been done yet, but might be if it falls off, see above.
