What I know about this hobby would fill up 1/4 of a small Post-It note. But what I do know is that it's a heck of a lot of fun. I have a Garrett ACE 250 (entry level - about $175) and my daughter, son and I have a blast with it. We live on 1 acre and we've found around 40 bullets out by the bois d'arc tree in the back. Clearly it was a backstop for a range sometime ago. We have yet to do large scale hunts, but I highly recommend getting a detector. Good clean fun.
