Just moved from So. Cal to my first cold winter climate. Snow is here so the bike is heading to hibernation. I have a Schumacher battery tender (no user manual). Which setting should I use for winter storage (6v 6amp, 12v 2amp or 12v 6 amp).. and it is better to d/c the battery from the bike or leave it connected? Thanks

I would guess that 12v 2amp setting works for our motorcycle batteries. I don't leave it connected and only connect it when not ridden in a week because I am riding another bike. I put it on the trickle charger the day before I ride her.

Sounds like a battery charger not a tender, you wouldn't have a 6 amp setting on a tender. Don't hook that up to tend your battery it doesn't have a safety to prevent over charge. If in fact it is a tender it's the first one I heard of with those higher settings.

I agree with Ian. Deltran Jr's are so inexpensive now, why not just get one of those (on sale at many places).

If that charger has a gauge or an idiot light on it you could use it to charge the battery on the 12/2 setting, but I would disconnect it once it shows the battery is charged. 12/6 is probably a bit much for a cold motorcycle battery. And 6 volts is a no-no for a 12 volt battery.
A battery tender is a trickle charger - 12 volts at a very low amperage - with circuitry to stop charging when the battery reaches it's potential, then resume charging if it drops a few volts. What you have is not a "tender" it's a battery charger.

What you have does sound like a battery charger. I have a Battery Tender Jr that puts out 750mA. It's good for motorcycle batteries, but is not recommended for car batteries. Tom

Hey Chris the Battery Tender is a good unit. Myers sells them. My wife got me the Battery Tender Plus for Christmas. Thing works like a charm. Give Sam a call at Myers he can get you set up. Hope all is well with you. Can't wait to warm weather gets here. I'm missing the bike night thing. lol

+1 on the Battery Tender Plus. The Plus can be left on the bike without any worry and it comes with all the cables and adaptors you might eventually need. I put the plug (to lug rings) on the battery and tuck the connector behind the cover below the seat. I carry the plug to clips when on trips with friends. Never know when I might need to jump a friend or get help myself.

Yes, North Carolina does get cold. It's 14°F in Alabama tonight, so I'll have to boost my bike off in the morning.
Those little 180cca batteries just won't stir up the winter molasses fast enough to start.
