Can anyone recommend to me a Zip file program that i can download for free. I want to be able email photographs and videos, but my email server tells me my files are to big.
I need something easy to operate as i am a bit of a dewfus when it comes to these computer thingies.

Thank you, first question. If i zip a file using this program, the people who i send the file to. Can they open it easy or will they need some thing to open it with.

7-zip.
There are also services like putfile.com that allow you to upload large files for other people to download. They're either free or there's a nominal charge. I've never used them but some people think highly of them.

IIRC, if you use winRAR they'll have to have it to "un-rar" the files. Zip is the most common protocol. Even some versions of Windows will open zip files automagically. Also, you can make Zip files self-executable, or self-unzippable. This could be a problem because the files have an ".exe" extension instead of a ".zip" extension and some mail servers don't like EXE files because they are one of the primary ways viruses and spyware are transmitted so they just block that filetype altogether. HOWEVER, it could still work since you are the source and you're probably fairly certain you don't have any viruses. If it's a problem you can change the filename extension to ".txt", send the file, then have the recipient change it back to ".exe" and unzip the file normally.

errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr  unzip, txt, exe, , err, i think i know what you mean. I will play with this for a while and send messages between my laptop and the wifes desk top. See how this works before i start email these things to friends over seas.

Just download (free) 7-zip and start there. If that doesn't work, come back and let us know.

you can also just zip them within XP if you are using that OS.
Right click on the file then -> Send to -> then compressed (zipped) folder. easy as cake.
A word to the wise is not necessary. It is the stupid ones who need the advice.

Is that a function of a service pack or something? My XP Pro at home doesn't do that but the one at work does. I should be completely up-to-date at home.

That's true. You can follow Dinqua's instructions if you are running Vista too. However, if that doesn't cut it or get it small enough...winRar will get it even smaller.

I just tried that using Vista, but it does not make it small enough. I'll try this winrar and see how that works. Why they cannot make computers simply is beyond me. You need a degree in computerology to do anything on these things.

I use Zip Central and Ultimate Zip Both are very easy to use and have lots of features. They will open almost anything including RAR files. You can also choose within the zip to open just part of it if you want. ultimate Zip Central These both create zip files very easily too and even create self-extracting files.

Are you talkikng about sending JPGs and MPGs? Those files are already compressed. Zipping files that are already compressed doesn't do much good, and in some cases, it can actually make them larger.

I made a video with photographs with music playing as well. I have managed to zip it and have sent it to my wife's computer using ZipCentral, but now i cannot get my wife's computer to open the file. 
These pesky computer things.

You may not wish to send it as a self extracting file. Many mail servers and anti-virus programs don't like executable files going through them.
Winrar is a great program.
I try to aggravate one person a day. Today may be your day.

Has to do with the way it unzips, I'm not a computer nerd so I am not sure how to explain it.

Making a zip archive self-extracting means the recipient doesn't have to have a zip program to open it, it self-expands. But making it self-extracting turns it into a program, not just an archive and some mail servers don't like sending those along. Many mail servers are configured to automatically assume programs are bad (or virus-laden).

+1 on 7-zip.
I used to have an older version of WinZip that came with the pc when I bought it. I decided to upgrade to WinZip 11 after I ran into a problem working with files I had tarred and then gzipped in Unix. The nag screens in v11 were a major pain so I went to 7-Zip after looking for some alternatives. I have been using 7-zip for a couple of months now and it works very well for me. Best of all, its open source software. You don’t have to pay if you don’t want to. (Though I like it so much I am thinking of sending them a 20)

bleh, i don't think he's following you guys. start with the simple things like -what type of file are you sending? anything that ends in .exe may not be sent by common email programs, or may be intercepted by the recipient's antivirus most other things, at least in xp, all you'd have to do is take everything you want to send, put it in a folder, right click on the folder, and select 'send to'. it will give you the option to send it to a compressed folder. do that, and you should have a zipped folder in the same directory as your original folder. here's an image of what i get when i right click, and pull down to send to, and then over to 'compressed folder'. if i did this, it would make a compressed copy of my folder 'everything else' on my desktop (because that is where i have that folder).

No, he said he zipped the file(s) and they didn't compress down far enough. He needs to find someplace to upload them so the recipients can download them. That's why I suggested putfile.com.
