I don't know how many of you have Norton AV but if you use Firefox don't update to the 2009 version. After doing so I couldn't open Firefox. I don't know if it is just a glitch to my installation or not but it took me a while to fix it. That is the last straw for me with Norton, it has been going down hill last couple years and I will get something different now.

I used Norton for a bit then McAfee for a bit. Had issues with both at one time or another. So for the past 2 or 3 years I have been using AVG on my wife maching and Avast on mine with no issues. The cost is good also. Free. My other computer I run Linux on so I have no need of virus protection on it. Do a Google search and try AVG or Avast out.

I use Comodo Internet Security and Spyware Terminator. Both free. Comodo is an antivirus and firewall with all sorts of things to configure, should you wish (or just leave it, as I do).
Of the better-known antivirus programs, I think they're all as effective as each other; it's just a case of which interface you prefer.

I like Avast over AVG as it loads and scans faster on my netbook and laptop. Both work fine, though.

I am a computer programming teacher and technology is what I do all day long. I'm putting in my 2 cents for AVAST. It works just fine.

Norton aka norton commander, was good back in the days of dos. when windows came round, norton felt obliged to intertwine itself so tightly with the operating system that they literally got to big for their britches. installing one of those products is akin to installing aol.
pc tools is free and easy.

I put AVG on a laptop once. While I suspect I had a virus, it trashed my laptop. Got no support from them. Back up your data before you install a virus protection software. Had to reinstall Windows after formatting the disk. I now have McAffee free from Comcast (part of their Internet cable service). Works great and good service. Now if they could just reduce TV commericals and improve the quality of the programs.

I use one that comes with the ISP software... and only costs 50p a month to keep upgraded.
Dad uses avast.
Neither of us have any problems.
I did use Norton at one point but it was such a pain in the backside when I upgraded my internet access to broadband I got the virus protection from them too.

I was looking at CA Internet Security, it's supposed to be in the top 3 and not resource hog like Norton. Thanks for all the suggestions, I'll have a look at Avast before I do anything. I don't like Mcafee or how ever they spell it.

I use this site and switch spywares every month or so: http://www.download.com/windows/security-software/1921-2023_4-0.html?tag=bcIt seems to me that the hackers kind of "learn where the holes in the fence" are located. What one misses, another will catch.

I have to disagree, I payed for Norton and it screwed my system up.I do hesitate to use any free anti-virus though. While I agree it would be better than nothing I doubt it would be as good as a pay for program. That isn't to say anything you pay for is good.

I agree with you Norton is a POS. Symantec did something in one of their updates that screwed with thousands of computers... our IT dept went through heck fixing the virus leak. I switched to AVG Pro, it caught a bunch of stuff Norton didn't and besides Norton is a resource HOG and we all know about how HOGs such as these suck when they break down

I use Avast, free anti-virus and ZoneAlarm firewall (free). I am a pretty hardcore gamer and they hardly hog resources and I've had no problems

Norton was fine back in the days of DOS 3.0. But they kept adding on to it and it got big and sloppy since then, kind of like windoze.

Well there is that and as they changed hands several times the program went down hill too. the program now purposly leaves small pirces of itself behind that you need a tool from Symantec to remove. They also don't try and make the program compatible with programs people want they instead tell you to remove them. Zonealarm is an example of a really good free program and I wouldn't remove that in favor of the Norton firewall built into the anti-virus.Up until now they recomeneded you remove it but it didn't cause a problem but now if you try and run Norton 2009 and Zonealarm it will freeze your system. Tiger Direct reccomended some when I was buying RAM from them, since the reason I was buying it was because Norton was making my system drag.I have 2.5 GB of RAM now but still want to find something better that doesn't hog so much of my resources. I'm still looking around, the program I mentioned before was offering a rebate if you could prove you bought Norton that ended up making it so all you pay is shipping. The regular price was about $80. Last I heard that was only until the first of the year and I didn't find out about it in time to research it myself.

After tolerating all the Windows crap the last several years my PC mercifully died and I'm back to using a Mac. I have 5 years of stuff on my PC backup drive that I have to figure out how to get onto the Mac but at least I get to go days at a time and not have my computer freeze for no observable reason.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

they are but cross your fingers nothing goes wrong with them... it will cost you the other arm and the other leg they didn't get when you first bought it! I used to be a mac user but graphics cards selections for macs is terrible and if something goes wrong with hardware I can just go down the street get what I need and be up and running in no time... if I could do that with a mac I would switch again, OSX is sweet.

I was a Mac user too but couldn't justify the cost a couple computers ago. I got twice the computer for 2/3 the money. I don't know why some people have so much trouble unless it's lack of maintenance. My computer doesn't freeze or crash. My Mac was more user friendly but now that I know Windows it's a non-issue. At the time I had a Mac it was just before the power Mac. I had a Performa 575 and a couple other before that one.

My Norton Internet Security has just come up for renewal... at £40! So thought I'd try these programs instead. Uninstalled NIS (and the bits they don't want you to uninstall!) Set up ZoneAlarm, that got tricky at one point, couldn't access the Net or my network but after a bit of fannying around managed to suss it out. Doing a full scan at the moment and Avast has already spotted 2 trojans and an adware that that NIS had failed to spot, and this is free?! Thanks for the heads up guys
