For those history buffs this is the 370 year anniversary of the beginning of a written Constitution in America.

The first written charter in America was in 1620, when the Mayflower Compact came into being. Later on the charter concept evolved into a more comprehensive type of constitution when Reverend Thomas Hooker and his associates adopted the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut. It should be noted that the Connecticut charter makes no reference to the Crown or the British Government as the source of its authority. It was a compact of “We, the people”.

It has been described that on the 14th of January, 1639, all the freemen of the three towns assembled at Hartford and adopted a written constitution in which the hand of the great preacher (Thomas Hooker) is clearly discernible. This document did not contain any of the conventional references to a “dread sovereign” or a “gracious King”, nor the slightest allusion to the British or any other government outside of Connecticut itself, nor does it prescribe any condition of church-membership for the right of suffrage. It was the first written constitution known to modern history, that created a government, and it marked the beginning of American democracy, of which Thomas Hooker deserves more than any other man to be called the father.

The government of the United States is in lineal descent more nearly related to that of Connecticut than with any of the other thirteen colonies. The foundation that Connecticut established in 1639 allowed it to silently grow till it became the strongest political structure on the continent, which was illustrated in the remarkable military energy and the unshaken financial support it provided during the Revolutionary War.

Maybe more than you wanted to know, but interesting.

Tom

Good post, Tom! Yep, over here, we're still burdened with the royal parasites, parasites that are even more powerful today than they were in George III's time. Trouble is...most people over here don't realise the enormous, unchallengeable power and influence of the monarchy and prefer to believe that the current incumbent merely serves to bring tourists into the country.

What sort of place provides laws that favour the royals over and above ordinary citizens.? What sort of society includes royal priveleges that enable the monarch and her son to 'control or otherwise intervene in proceedings that affect their rights, property and profits'? What sort of system requires the parliament in Westminster, the Scottish Parliament and the Welsh Assembly Government to include special provisions in their standing orders that require them to consult these parasites in the event that new or proposed legislation impacts upon their interests??

You can bet your butt that this lot are doing very well out of the current economic crisis!

Would you please forward the US Constitution to Gordon Brown - he might learn something. On the other hand, I'll bet he'll feel quite sick!

Our history is fascinating. Did you know Canada was almost part of the USA? Ben Franklin was bargaining for Canada with England as part of the settlement to ending the Revolutionary War. It was real close but Congress decided it was time to move on. What a mistake. We might have all had Universal Health Care and French as our second language, Mon Ami.

A friend cruising in Mexico sent me this yesterday. Seems appropriate to the original topic of a constitutional government.

Please watch this video. It might be too late for some of us, but our kids and grandkids need to understand this. I am afraid of the direction we are heading in America .
