The CDI and ignition coils are sub-standard on the America and Speedmaster. Not one bit of money has been spent by Triumph to make them 1- cheaper or 2- more dependable. There is no replacement aftermarket. If you have a failure on the road it will more than likely be electrical.

Many also hate the rain and stop running as they are not well sealed electrical systems.

I havent had either one of those problems. My bike lives outside and is going through its fourth winter.

Soren

You have aftermarket coils don't you?

Several have had issues with the CDI.
I have about 34,000 on my '04 SM, haven't had any real problems.
It did start to act like a bad coil/CDI, occasionally running on one cylinder for a few minutes. But after adjusting the air gap to the revised spec (0.8mm) 10,000 miles ago, it hasn't done it,

There have also been many instances of corroded electrical connections, cured by cleaning and application of dielectric grease.

Too early to say for me as others are more qualified having done 20,000 miles plus however EFI model after 6,000 UK miles no problems just pleasure.

My experience of Harley's and feedback from buddies is that Trumpets are more reliable. Do like Harleys very much in particular the Rocker C however to ride and own TBA takes a lot of beating!

Hmmmmm.

I think I'll see if I can have the folks at Wiktionary include the above as a prime example on their website if one wished to know what the term "D*mning with faint praise" means!!!

(...or maybe EVEN "A left-handed compliment"!!!)

I have 2 04s and haven't had either problem either. I have ridden for hours at a time in some pretty heavy downpours. Well one of them is Wendy's bike but we are always together. My friend Tom has an 02 or 03 and same thing, never a problem and has been with me in some of that rain.

I also ridden in serious rain with no problem. But, I did have both coils and the igniter replaced on warranty by my dealer after trying to figure out why one cylinder would cut out occasionally. Never did it again and that was 2 years and 9000 miles ago. I had a starter break (gear socket) but that also was repaired on my warranty which had ended 8 months before it happened.

Still, I've never owned a bike I would consider as reliable. Igniter problems are non-existent on later models and they redesigned the casing that held the starter gear in 2006 or so after finding a 2% failure on earlier models. I'll ride just about anywhere and as far as my butt can stand. I hope to have this bike for many years and miles to come.

there were little if any problems in the rain with the first americas/speedys..only in 07 with the new non-venting fuel caps and no replacements available from Eddy/Brent did the issue come up..My 07 stalled once,I opened fuel cap and replaced but not tight(this allows air in as they are gravity fed carbs)and bike ran fine and continues to do so today..Now the 09 are fuel injected and should have no issues with rain/fuel starving!!

life is good..I am retired..sold my America in 2008,bought a Rocket and sold that in 3/2013 and now own a new Triumph Bonneville T-100

Ok, so we never have threads about drifted to a stop in the rain and we have no CDI problems here lol.

I apologize, must have read all those dozens of threads in a Honda forum.

I stand corrected, only my CDI failed and I was too stupid to buy an aftermarket one then have it re-mapped to a 270 crank.

Hey Yota,

That "Trophy" is S-O-O far removed from "The Triumph Trophy" that John Bloor should be embarrassed.

I'm buying an '09 Bonnie as soon as my hands heal. (The Monster 1000 and '92 750 Zed need a roommate.) I am seriously considering an "America".

I know, I hate riding ion the rain on sooo many levels. When we went to Johnstown last year we got caught in the rain every day. Wiped the bikes down when we parked after each time with micro fiber cloths we carry. Easier than washing the bike later. That way at least they didn't look so cruddy.

Although it sounds like I should avoid riding it in wet weather (not sure how much was joking and how much was serious), I am planning to go in and put a deposit on a 2009 SpeedMaster in Phantom Black tomorrow. I pulled some cash from an account that isn't doing very well these days (what is?) in order to spend it on something fun while I can and, of course, to help stimulate the economy I will finalize the deal and take delivery as soon as the check comes in.

Based on the posts here and on other site I will pass on the TORs and take my time to decide on the appropriate pipes. I should have about $130 left after the deal is done so I will at least buy a T-shirt anything I don't spend I will hold onto for future enhancements.

Thanks to everyone who responded and hope to see at least some of you on the road soon. Anyone here from Houston?

You will LOVE it. I rode mine for 1000 miles in one day and the only part that failed at the end of a 3000 mile trip was a chain guard, and that part has been upgraded on later models by Triumph
