Hi All,
Have any of you out there had a knee replaced or know anyone who rides that has had a knee replacement?

My mother has had both knees done Skip and both hips. I believe the knee is a lot more involved than the hip. Unfortunately she gave up riding bikes before the ops..

Knees are a little harder then the hips because the knee has to move so much, with good rehab and real hard work on your part you should be good to go.

Had a total replacement of my right knee 12/11/07 after 30 years of deterioration and 4 prior surgeries. Although rehab was somewhat less than pleasant the only thing I can say is I wish I'd done it sooner.

A retired friend from work had both knees replaced after hobbling around for many years. He told me the therapy afterwards was rough, but he stuck with it and he is like a new man. He rides a HD - even bought a new one after the operation.

If you need it, get it.

The equipment greaser where I work had one knee replaced twp years ago.
He's off now rehabbing from having the other knee replaced.

He doesn't ride, but his job involves climbing all over construction equipment.

"Better than new" is how he describes it.

An old mate of mine had both his knees replaced, due to sporting injuries sustained during his youth. The first was great the second not so great,it left him with limited movement in his left knee. He was carrying a bit of weight though.

He was adamant that he had done the right thing and that although he had restricted movement, he didn't have to suffer the pain any more.

Talk with your surgeon and weigh up the benefits and possible difficulties if it does not prove successful.

Skip, My brother had a double last spring and was riding before mid-summer. As mentioned, the recoup therapy is key. Do what they say and do it religiously. You'll be fine.

I think Derek Mosher(known as "SalMaglie" at BA.com) had a total knee replacement within the last year or two.

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Thanks for all your replys.
I don't know for sure that I need one yet but it's nice to know I won't have to give up the bikes if I do.

Thanks,
Skip

I had total knee replacement plus a shaft down through the shin bone in March of 2006. When I went in for my 6 week check-up I rode my bike, 25 miles to the Doc and 75 miles back home. Now the Doc didn’t think that was a real good idea but he was very impressed with the condition of my knee. As he put it.” If everyone would do what I tell them to do they would all have successful surgery. Last year I went, with my son, on a two day hike on the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail. Doc didn’t think that was a good idea either but said since he couldn’t hold me down he wanted me to wear a brace when I did such foolishness, and gave me a brace. I had no problem with the knee on that hike but oh my heart and lungs.
The key is to work your leg as hard as you can, maybe just a little harder and if ya can get one of them machines that ya strap your leg in and it bends your leg back and forth while ya sleep on the couch, I mean watch TV, and USE it at least six hours a day. Repeat, six hours a day. It hurts but ya get used to it then crank it to bend a little further.
In other words, your success depends mostly on you.
I wish ya the best if ya get it done.

I've become comfortably numb

Too bad they can't just rebush the joint and maybe put a grease fitting in...
