 Front wheel Removal

I'm sure this has been posted somewhere else in the forums, but I'm just looking for a quick answer. I'm removing the front wheel so I can get some parts powder coated. What size allen wrenches are used to remove the front axle?

Otay , I,m back . You'll need a 6mm Allen to crack the pinch bolts .
The axle has a cap screw configuration , get on it with a 12mm and a 19mm , if you don't have a 19mm , any bolt with a 3/4 head will work , just get two jam nuts on it and voila-you have a cheap wrench .
P.S. The cap on the right - break it loose before you loosen the pinch bolts on that side .

5/8" sparkplug wrench flipped around also works in place of the 19 mm.

I heated a bolt and bent it at a right angle to make a wrench for that. The bolt head fits in the axle.

I've had my front wheel off and on many times and never saw the need for a wrench to fit the axle bolt....once the nut is removed, it should slide out easily....just take off the nut before you loosen the pinch bolts.....

I don't understand the "what size" questions? It's whatever size fits! If one size doesn't fit, try the next size. I guess I'm assuming People have a tool set, and not running to the tool store to buy ONE tool at a time?

I realize this is an old post, but Erle, do you have a 19mm Hex wrench in your set?
I had to change a tire today, and came to this thread, to "see" if I had what I needed. I didn't have a 12mm or a 19mm Hex wrench in my set, and I do have a set of tools.

Dude!, If you don't have a 12mm wrench, then I'd say NO, YOU DON'T HAVE A TOOL SET!!!  And yes, I do have a 19mm wrench. (socket too)

On the other hand I've been wrenching since 1972 and I didn't have either size since they're not commonly included in Allen (hex) sets. Never need 'em from my '68 Mercedes 250S through all my metric bikes until now.
Joe, go to Lowe's and buy a 12mm Kobalt hex socket, they're made by the same company that makes Craftsman and SK and then turn a 5/8" spark plug socket inside out:

Socket Cap Screws...... Hex KEY wrenches.
How many you got in your "set" I have a roll around full of tools, but I did not have a 12mm hex key nor a 19mm.
I do now.

you don't need a 19mm wrench for the axle!.......just use the pinch bolts to hold it in place while you loosen the 12mm nut.......

You'll need it when you torque the axle back to spec.
