I used a semi-gloss wrinkle finish (Krylon, probably) with minimal sanding (not much more than a 2 minute dust-off with 600 or so) and it held up fine. Then I ended up taking them off completely and moved the peg down to the lower hole. Wife say's it's more comfortable that way.
