Well, it's spring, and some of us may have a tax refund that goes into our bike fund.

I'm ready to get a windshield for the bike and a couple questions have come up regarding height. The higher screens act like a sail while the shorter ones can cause buffeting.

I'm anywhere from 5'6" to 5'8" depending on which convenience store I happen to be leaving (credit Ron White). I've also heard that proper sizing is to just be able to see over the top lip of the screen. I'm looking at a shorter screen. I'll have to get out there and do some measuring this evening.

Has anyone dealing with National Cycle mounted the Chopped or Shorty screen to their bikes? Is the "looking just over the top" sizing the correct way to do it?

I followed the instructions from Clearview Shields:

I like to look over the shield. I've ordered two shields from Clearview and measured one up this way (as it was a replacement shield and hardware was in place). The height is bang on. I cut down one other shield using the same measuring method, and it also turned out perfect.

I have the two-up. I'm 6-foot-3, and the top of the screen comes to my noze, perhaps a little lower.

I definitely like looking just over the screen versus thru the plastic.

Keith, I won't ask the obvious to ask whether you can lower yours any further down the forks, but I'm not a fan of looking through the screen either. At least now you have scope to cut yours down to exactly the right size. It's all part of the fun trying to get things as suitable for our own tastes isn't it? I just love my big shot and with the lowers I can virtually ride without any eye protection if I wanted. I don't of course but it proves how much wind protection I have. Not to mention the quick release hardware for round town if you want.

Going to bump this from the dead.

Got my windscreen on a while ago but haven't had time to take many pics yet.

I went with the National Cycles Switchblades Chopped Tinted windshield. I used the part numbers and info listed here and with advice from Chip and Phaedrus, I got it together. The height of this windscreen is just right for my size and I look just over the top of the screen.



Couple of notes. Those straps are truly a PITA to get started but once started, they're fine except for not a lot of adjustment downward on the shrouds. The windshield sits pretty close to the stock located turn signals and speedometer and rubbed on them. I fabbed a couple of new turn signal brackets and it fits fine now. Finally, since the mounts and windshield are meant for straight shrouds but mine were tapered, the top of the mount sat too close together and I had to slightly tweak the top of the mounting brackets on the windshield inward a little on each side to get everything to line up.

I really like this windshield in colder weather and for longer road trips. Buffeting isn't bad at all and the ability to remove it when the weather gets even warmer is what I was looking for.

My '05 SM came w/ a summer screen from Triumph and I ride w/ a modular full face helmet. I'm 6'1" and I look way above the top of the shield. I experience minimum buffeting at head level and have complete chest protection, and can ride with the face shield up w/ sunglasses on w/o bothering my contact lenses. I'm beginning to suspect that for some reason the summer shield is actually more efficient than the roadster. I also like the minimalist style of a shield w/ no chrome straps across the shield. My only complaint is I can't hide behind it effectively when it rains.

I just replaced my summertime screen to a clearview. I had to cut it down 1.5". It improved the buffeting immensely, but it's still there. I use a 3/4 helmet with visor, I think I'm going to go back to the full face. It just seems like the wind is a lot less bothersome with a full face. So the solution for me is keep the windshield I have and go back to a full faced helmet.

I am going to order a clearview screen for my 2002 america. Does anyone have the brackets for sale?
