Buy your scooters now.... The Tariff Piaggo responds"It is simply unconscionable that motorcycles and scooters are on the list in the first place. They have no place in a trade war over beef," Moreland said. "Furthermore, we find it tragically ironic that, as part of the auto bailout plan, federal lawmakers are considering requirements for American car makers to produce more fuel-efficient vehicles, and yet the motorcycles and scooters that the U.S. trade representative is considering for the 100 percent tariff get three to five times better fuel economy than many cars." (probably belongs down in legislation)

As long as US on-highway fuel is taxed by the gallon, there will be little if any incentive for lawmakers to legislate in favor of any form of motor fuels conservation.

That's politicians for you. I wonder if their Japanese buddies who already have factories here are planning to expand in that market? Is that going to include Chinese imports or just European ones?

Motorcycles are viewed in the US as recreational vehicles. That's probably why they've been included on the list. Seems unlikely a 100% tariff on anything will pass; it's simply too extreme.

Is there even anyone in the US making bikes or scooters this size? Seems to me just something to collect revenues.

i'm for increasing the tariffs on imported products, but i think that it should primarily apply to companies that call themselves american, but move all their assembly overseas to avoid paying labor here. make it so that 'american' companies have to make their products in america.

That is very interesting.
In 1929 after the stock market crashed the politicians in Washington decided to impose Tariffs on all goods coming in from Europe (in an attempt to protect the America worker). Within a year over 60% of all trade world wide stopped, which was one of the main contributors for the world wide great depression. It is unfortunate that history seems to recycle itself.
