http://newbonnevilleriders.com/forum/index.phpfor anyone who goes over there any time. I saw the post that pi$$ed the dude off, well, the pile of things leading to this. Kind of funny that the forum made to get away from the rats nest has come to this.

I think its hillarious.... I dont know what lead up to it but all that freedom they have over there seems to not be free. Whats the phrase...."tyranical rule" or "dictatorship"...yes..."dictatorship" seems to fit. Dang it...no new "babes on bikes" postings now...

I liked the site but "The dude" need to calm down.I understand how frustrating it must be for him but he has to realise he is just making it worse by over reacting.

I haven't been on that board in quite a while so I too missed what ever lead up to this. Even when I was on there it was just checking out the babes on bikes thread, not much else I saw on there that I was really interested in. The freedom was fun at first but the site lacks something.

Ok, I will try to shed some light on it for you guys who don’t know what happened. I didn’t spend a lot of time over there and only have 3 posts so I am not am expert, but this is what I know. The main admin and site founder is "The Dude".He seems to me to be a good guy but has been increasingly frustrated with members who disagree with him on seemingly any subject (my opinion). The subject that caused this implosion was a gun thread. The Dude is a cop and pro gun and gun rights. It started as in innocent gun thread just like the one we have here. It’s an international site so members from out of country have other opinions regarding guns. Several of these members thought that the thread was glamorizing guns and violence. There point was that it’s a triumph site not a gun site. The gun thread was the only one with any real activity. The Dude became very defensive about the thread and it became a war of words with a lot of STFU or get out from him. Several members voluntarily left and deleted there posts, others were banned; it was a train wreck...The final straw was a video posted by a member who dubbed a video of Hitler with words from The Dude.... I thought it was funny myself. Like I said I was not very involved with this site but it seems to me as an outsider that a site that was set up for freedom from the over moderation of TRAT became more over moderated than what it was to replace. Silly boys.

Doesn't sound like he was that keen on the concept of "freedom of speech" after all.

See all the trouble guns cause? That's why gun controls should be far more stringent.
This, of course, is a sarcastic comment from someone who is not allowed to own a gun. It is not meant to be a serious point of view. Please do not take it as such. I thank you.

Hmmmmm. Well, offhand I'm thinkin' "The Dude" might just have his own take on William Penn's famous quotation, and now HIS reads: "I may not always agree with what you say, but I will defend unto death MY RIGHT TO SHUT YOUR FRIGGIN' PIE HOLE FOR YA IF I DON'T!!!" (personally, if ya ask me, I like Mr.Penn's original version a little bit more)

Part of why I stopped going there is that "The Dude" seemed to pick and choose what was considered free and OK and what wasn't with no real guideline. He seems like a nice guy to me too from the exchanges I had with him. Trouble is with free speech and opinions is that everyone has their own opinion and for the site to truly be free he would have to allow both sides of the issue to be voiced weather he agrees with that view or not. I never had any issue over there but to go there just so I can swear when I feel the need wasn't enough to keep me going back. I did enjoy being able to express myself as an adult and not have to be G rated but there wasn't much activity I was interested in so what use is it if I have nothing to say? I can interact here even if I can't express my opinions in some cases (Brent at Newspeedmaster) or have to curb my language from time to time. I believe some less vulgar things could be allowed here like the D word and a few others that are not as bad that are banned with the F word but I don't make the rules and long ago got tired of arguing over things.

Most people don't. In the USA it was meant for freedom of POLITICAL speech. People think free speech means you can say what you want without repercussion which is false, it means you have the right to speak your mind, but not necessarily without adverse reaction.

Wrong. You should never be allowed to yell "fire" in a crowded movie theater. Should you?
Not all speech should be PROTECTED. I will defend the right someone has to voice there opinion, but I will not defend what they say. If your opinion is shunned and no one wants to speak to you anymore, well that's your tough luck.

I've only been on this site for a little over half a year, but have been on many others. I am more impressed with this one than any others. Its always flawless in operation, ( well, except for P.P.) and I've said some things that I had second thoughts of whether it was a little over the line or not, and didn't get chastised for it. We can always get our adult message across without having to spell it out, and I for one find it to have the perfect balance. Kudos to whomever is responsible!

Freedom of speech does not imply that one has the right to be an insensitive jerk. My wife has a bumper sticker that I like, "just because you HAVE one doesn't mean you have to BE one!

Wrong. You should never be allowed to yell "fire" in a crowded movie theater. Should you?
Your example of yelling "fire" is not what is conventionally perceived (or written in International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights or any human rights documents) to be the definition of free speech, which is what I was referring to. Specifically, the freedom of expression/speech/opinions ... without limitations or repercussions.

I'm not sure there is a relevance covering the definition of free speech. Just your stance, depending on whether your opinion coincides or not.

I'm not sure there is a relevance here, either.

I've been pretty active over there since it started, the TriumphRat.net site folks made me mad so I was glad to see an alternative. I thought the anti-gun folks complaints were odd since that thread was in the "anything goes" forum. Hey, it's winter time, what else can us Northerners do, watch TV?

One thing I noticed about that site was it's not really any different than TRat, it still has the elitist attitude from a lot of the members, and there is almost no action in the America/Speedmaster section. I guess because this site is enough for that.

Well THAT'S good! Now that I've found out about that other website, thanks to this thread here, I know that there's yet ANOTHER place where I can go rant about the lack of cooling fins on that new Thunderbird!!! Freedom of speech is just that in my opinion. You are free to say what you want when you want with no legal ramifications with in reason. In some cases there will be, like if you threaten to murder or do other bodily harm where it can be proven. I am going through this right now some dumba$$ texted and left voice mails threatening to kill someone and to pay someone to rape that person and her little sister (15 yrs old). Trouble is all the guy is being charged with is stalking and all lesser charges are being dropped. I think more should have been done he is pleading guilty to stalking in exchange for dropping the rest. Now he was free to say those things but he also has to accept the consequences. That is an extreme example but proves the point that you can say anything you want but it will effect those around you and in some cases there will be a backlash of some sort.
On a side note if there are any laws that idiot broke that we haven't thought of. Like something to do with making those threats via the cell air waves. I couldn't find anything on use of the air waves to make such threats. So any of the law people on here that may have some insight or suggestions please PM me and let me know. Thank you in advance.

Personally I would like to think that most folk on this site take pride in being a bit smarter than the average bear. After all we did all choose better bikes than the majority.
I have never found a subject that I would consider contentious. Most of the guys who do post on here are pretty erudite in their writings. Some guys are technically brilliant with the work they can do on the bikes. Some guys have wealth of knowledge on subjects I know little or nothing about. I am prepared however to freely admit my lack of knowledge in certain areas.
I have watched threads on every thing from what is the best type of BBQ sauce, Whisky, Tyres and multitude of other subjects. I have joked with fellow members and have laughed out loud at some posts.
We all follow the social contract rather well on this site. I have not seen some of the vitriol or scorn that infests some sites. That is why I stay. We come from all sorts of backgrounds some are wealthy some are poor. Some are working some are retired. But we all try to look after this site in our small ways. We do take time to consider is this a legitimate post. We may not agree and as any family the occasional spat is to be expected. Our disagreements are mild and should in no way deflect from the really great group of people who do care and do take time to message each other and to make this one of the best online Forums any where. Ladies and gentlemen I take my hat off to all of you. Long may we continue.

I, too, felt that TRat was becoming overmoderated. It was at the time that it had been bought out by a commercial company and in a state of change. And so I moved to NBR for a bit of freedom. Sadly, because the site allowed swearing and stupid posts, people did just that. I didn't stay long. Now TRat has been settled down, it's a decent forum to visit. There's a definite international flavour going on there, whereas here is more like Little America, with just enough non-US to make it bearable!! Going back to MBR vs here (or even TRat); I'm just curious as to whether this is indicative of the type of person who buys the model of bike they do (within the P-twin range); are Triumph cruiser riders more tolerant, considerate, dare I say it, mature? This isn't a "we're better than them" question but a social/anthropological one, and, of course, it's a generalisation. I like it here.

I belong to a bunch of non-MC forums so i can't speak to brand/model differences but the degree of civility and good sense on this site is amazing compared to all but the most stringently business-like forums. People here will sometimes blow off a newbie question or make a sarcastic comment but almost always the intent is good and the tone is friendly.
IMHO this kind of behaviour is probably initially set by good moderation but it's self reinforcing. Somebody who has a momentary impulse to act out will think better of it knowing that others will see it badly or remembering how they've been treated in the past. I think also, people strive to contribute here and we're trying to live up to the quality of the posts we've benefited from in the past. Mostly my comments apply to the more technical posts but I bet the tone spills over into the lounge and humour posts.
BTW, I had missed the post two above mine [kidhaf] but that was well put.
