I have no complaints about the 5w40 Syn (blue jug).
I would bet that the new white jug stuff would be just as appropriate, but I have no reason to change.

My Speedmaster seems to run fine on Motul 15/50 Semi Syn. However, the price just went up and I now have to pay $50.00's Can. which is equal to $60.00 US. per US Gallon. @#$%^& you can buy a BARREL of oil for $50's!
Don't want to hijack your post Keith....but my question is...can you go back to Dino oil after using Semi Syn? Much cheaper per Gallon.

O boy, another earl thread. I have used the Shell Rotella 5w-50 or whatever the stuff is in the blue WallyMart 1 Gallon jugs, wit no problems - even with a Wiseco big Bore (with over 20k miles on mine / extreme abuse considered to be the norm as well).
Run friggin cat lard in her, the bike will run with pretty much any type "loob" in her.
Yumpin friggin yahaminesees - it's oil! Lube! Slick Buggars! Petro! Synthetic, semi-synthetic - pure bred, etc -- It's friggin cylinder snot - that is all it is!!
2 many making 2 much out of it.
Put Crisco/Vegatable oil in and it will run ...not as good, but WTF? it will git your sorry butt home!!!!!!!!!
By the way, what size jets should I use if I am at 12529' above see level riding a Green 2002 BA??? What if I want to actually make it home? Hey, you wanna gimmee a push dood?? No? Got any beer?

the Wally world blue jug sythentic is the best bang for your buck hands down no holds barred.
I have been running it for a couple of years now with 50K on the Speedie.
No issues. And I know ..had I paid through the nose for the spensive Mobil syn it sure would not have seen any difference.

Been using Amsoil forever it seems. Using 20/50 for less than $10/qt. Their synthetic is untouchable for availability & durability. Many wts & other products available.

SHELL ROTELLA-T SYNTHETIC
Only available in the 5W40 viscosity, and comes in a blue jug, by the quart, or by the gallon.
When I change oil and filter, I use the whole gallon jug, and I have never seen my oil level show overfull, although she may spot some on the ground after a ride for a few miles or so. It's so much easier when it comes pre-measured...

It may seem that way if your store is not stocking anything else.
Check this:
ROTELLA PRODUCTS PAGE
Only the blue jug is full-synthetic, although I am quite sure the white jug stuff will work fine.

So, I take it the Rotella isn't MC oil, but someone took a chance, poured it in, and discovered that it didn't ruin the clutch?

You are correct. I think it was Dinqua who first put us on to this product. Diesel synthetics have no "friction inhibitors" typically found in automotive oils. This is the additive that is bad for wet clutch operation. I'm another user for the last 3 yrs. and have had no problems.
Now....let the oil threads die.

Just to play devil's advocate, what happens if Shell decides to quietly include an additive that's harmful to MCs? I'm not convinced this is a smart way to save money.

I agree, I use only motorcycle specific oil in my bike. Amsoil 20-50 full syn. Motorcycle oil. I am not gonna argue it , that's why I haven't said anything about it until now but I think the extra money for it is well spent to protect my bike.

I really don't think shell is going to do that, they are well aware of rotella's use in motorcycles and while they do not endorse it, they have done testing to ensure it meets manufacturers' specifications.

That and older bikes had 3 seperate oils in most cases. They had engine oil in one place and they had transmission oil in a different filler hole and then they and primary oil in a 3rd filler hole. They took 3 different oils in them in many cases to boot. One of my Triumph manuals says 20-50 engine,SAE 50 for the trans , and 10-30 in the primary. Some of those viscosities are different in different manuals before any of you guys with later model old Triumphs say anything. That and many guys ran SAE 90 gear oil in the trans to slow leaky seals.

Oh-Ya, Definitly, No doubt. No other reasons of course. Oil was always to blame. Some of those motors may have even turned 7,400 RPM's! (MY 80' GS850 has over 60k on the odometer, many more while cable was disconnected, and NO motor work yet! Hits well over 7.4k all the time.) The manuf.Owner's Manual spec's "A premium motor oil rated SE, SAE 10W-40. And to think, None of my bikes EVER used more then one oil in one location, but vintage to me includes the 70' big four, plus many others. Maybe that wasn't considered. My bad. God save the Queen.

I have had several 70s bikes and all of the ones I had used at least 2 oils.Including 4 Suzukis and 3 Yamahas, those were all 2 strokers and had a separate primary oil can't remember if they had a separate tranny oil anymore or not. Then there is my 64 BMW that has engine oil, tranny oil , drive shaft oil, and differential oil. All separate. Dry clutch in that once so no primary oil.

Well, Shock oil,Fork oil, differ.oil, shaft oil, chain oil, & fuel injection oil excluded, My H2, H1, Honda, Kawa., Suzuki, yamaha, C/Z, (Four stroke & two stroke), all only had one oil, Manuf. spec. MOTOR oil, in the tranny case. Guess it's just me.

The "car oil clutch slip issue" is vastly overhyped IMO.
Any reasonable oil & filter combo changed at reasonable intervals is going to protect just fine.

I am only speaking of engine, trans ,and primary. Our bikes now have 1 oil for all 3 so there is clutch dirt that gets in the oil from normal wear. All I was saying that it has been my experience with almost (can't think of one that didn't) every bike I even rode or was owned by a friend had a separate oil for the primary so clutch dirt and friction modifiers in the engine oil didn't matter in that respect. The bulk of my experience is Triumph,BSA,Norton, and Harley. I do remember a shovel that had a common oil for the primary and engine but the ones I saw had return problems and most guys blocked them off so there were separate oils.

I agree, oil is oil. I use Mobile-1 15-50 synthetic non-mc oil. $23 for 5 qts. at Wal-mart. Change it once a year or every 6-10,000 miles whichever comes first. I decided early on I'm not going to pay $15 per qt. for MC oil.

I used to work in a junkyard and you should see how clogged the inside of some of those engines are. It amazed me that some still ran.
