From what I read on the BBC; Good news: They are reducing the VAT until 12/31.
Bad news: To reduce "greenhouse" emissions, they want to MOT your furnaces and cookers.

Haven't heard about the MOT for household stuff - but I rent so I wouldn't pay for it anyway! They have a check every year as a legal thing anyway, but thats a flow and ventilation check....don't think that includes emissions....
The VAT lowering......won't make that much difference on everyday purchases. At £10 it's 25p. Ok yeah it'll be 25p in my pocket, but can't get THAT much for 25p these days.....

For once the T doesn't mean tax!! MOT is actually an inspection of all vehicles over 3 years old, and the initials are short for Ministry Of Transport, the then name of the government dept that first introduced the test.

Still another rip off the MOT inspection is only valid at the time of the inspection..your MOT is valid for one year but is no indication that 1 minute after the test your car/bike can be deemed unroadworthy due to a blown bulb or collapsed shocks. It is illegal to drive ride a vehicle without MOT and you cannot get road Tax without a current MOT and insurance. So the MOT is an indirect path to Road Tax .....oh yes andf you have to pay VAT on your MOT ....

I'm certain that your part of the world is a wonderful and glorious place to live and call home, but I read about all of the taxes, and petty regulations, and cameras all over the place, and I can't help but feel thankful that I live in little old, backwards, simple Arkansas and not California.
Oops, I meant Great Britain and associated countries...

Ahem...John. Least I remind you that The Golden State does not have any VATs! (well, not counting those VATs the tweekers out there in such locales as Barstow and other remote desert communities use to concoct their supplies of METH, anyway!!!)

lets see, history shows that when taxes go down, people have more of THEIR OWN hard earned money, they buy MORE "stuff" when this occurs and this translates into MORE taxes being collected and the governments revenues going UP ! So why implement more and more taxes when this has the (proven) opposite effect ? could it be the politicians unquinchable desire for control over our lives by "taking" the fruits of our labor and thusley limiting our own ability to provide for ourselves and making the populace as a whole more dependent on ... government?
