Over here we get problems if petrol is left sitting (particularly in carbs, but sometimes in injectors) for more than a couple of months. This modern unleaded stuff dries out and jellifies then becomes a hard residue which clogs up the jets. It looks like a white crust. At a guess US gas isn't too disimilar. So if this bike was sat in the dealers for any length of time, this could be the cause.
