Well kids, I have resisted this one for quite awhile but... I have had 2 full face helmets - the current one modular - and I hate 'em. Can't hear, can't see, and they are just uncomfortable. I always wear a helmet - a shorty like the police wear. Spare me the gory accident crap. I prefer to have all my senses available to avoid the accident in the first place. If your idea of safe riding involves being covered in kevlar and plastic from head to toe, go for it. I prefer to see and hear and smell the sights and sounds and aromas, good and bad. Otherwise, I'd take my truck. If/when the day comes when my senses fail me and my head splits like a ripe melon, close the box, spit on the lid, and say "I told you so!" I won't argue with you then....

I used to wear a half helmet. That ended one day when I actually saw the bug coming that hit my face. It looked like a dad gum turkey. Anyway, it hit me right on the cheek bone just below the glasses. It hit me so hard and splattered so much that it almost blinded me and knocked me off the bike. Plus it put a pretty good cut on my cheek. I rode straight to a shop, threw the half helmet away and bought a 3/4 with a face shield. I have never regretted that decision. I like it even more every time I come home from a ride and have to wipe all the bugs off the face shield that would have otherwise ended up on my face.

I feel likewise, but i still wear the bobble-head on occasion. Like for parades or other low speed stuff.

Bugs provide protein. You gotta learn to catch them in flight. Rocks provide minerals. Facial scars provide machismo. Just smartazzin here... This discussion will never have a resolution. It is up to the individual as to what risks they are willing to take. If flying vermin and road debris are a problem, you do what suits you best. For me, the benefits of experiencing the open road outweigh the occasional gobsmack from an errant insect. But that's me....

1983, cold out and the puddles were frozen over. Riding my 1977 Honda 550 four and made a right turn over a frozen puddle. Lost it and my helmet busted my fairings windscreen clean off. Took off the helmet and looked at it. The clear plastic face shield was broken in two places and the front of the full face helmet was all messed up. No matter how you look at it the helmet will save you face. It can't hurt.
My dream may be your nightmare.

I have both types of helmets. One is a full faced job and is painted bright yellow. I added some black stripes, a fast eddy decal and some red reflective tape.
It has excellent ventilation and is cooler in vegas with the face shield closed than when it is open. It fits so well around the face that when the shield is open my head sweats a ton. When closed the vents allow cool air to flow over my head and out the back vents. It never fogs up even when I stop at a light.
The short helmet I thought would be cooler in the hot weather but it is terrible. It fits well but has no vents and I sweat a ton with it on. It has been relegated to staying strapped onto the luggage rack for passenger use only as I will not wear it.
The only time I ride without a helmet is when I take the bike to the pool which is located inside the trailer park. It is a long walk and I can put all my stuff in the saddle bags along with my liquid refreshments and reading materials and ride with the swim trunks and mocassins and ride the bike about 1500 feet to the pool.
07 Speedmstr, Long Tors, bags, sissy bar and rack, windshield, engine bars, 2 ww lights, 2 fast eddy stickers and a .45 ACP.

I was considering an open face helmet for Summer riding but I was cured of that when I saw the result of Freedom's accident.

Glad your back on her Dan, how's the leg doing? Last week was a good example of what you're talking about, open the face shield at 45 mph in 113 degree temps and it's like turning a blow drier in your face Mucho cooler with wind blocked.

1/2 helmets are only good for short low speed rides. They act like a parachute at speed and make my neck sore after an hour or so. My Fulmer Modus is comfortable all day long. The only negative is the poor vents, a little dremel work cured that.

I'll throw my 2 cents in. Quit using a full face helmet for two reasons in the 80's. First was the near miss I barely avoided when, at a stop light, I happened to look in the mirror and see a cadillac in a side power slide heading right for me. Never heard the dang thing. I was wearing a full face HJC. Had to Rock the throttle and bust the light. The caddie didn't stop until the middle of the intersection. Secondly, a helmet study in the 80's showed that full face helmets were breaking necks due to the way the neck strap was designed. It seemed that a direct hit on the chin caused the lower unit (with the neck strap) to break loose, bringing the strap across the larnynx and snapping the vertabrae at number 3 & 4. From then on I wore a 3/4 or 1/2, IF I wear a helmet at all. I'm sure they're designed better these days, but I've seen guys bite it at all speeds with and without cans on. Bottom line, when the reaper wants you, it's time. I too, drive a bike for the freedom of the breeze. I figure if I was to load up like some Arthurian knight, I might as well drive an F-250 (which I do on occassion, but not for fun). To each his own. OK, so maybe its a nickels worth.

Wonder what the studies would show for a "direct hit on the chin" for wearers of 3/4, 1/2, and no helmet users? (no, I don't wear a helmet at all. Dam- the torpedos!)
And you may see me tonight

Hey now ,
I'm as good looking now as I ever was, the mystical/magical surgical staff in Spokane worked a miracle and fixed me up good as gneu .
Granted, I do remember waking up through a narcotic-induced haze on July 19 (best birthday ever), feeling a significant hole under the bandages covering my lower jaw and reflecting "This probably isn't very good"
I am sure thinking hard and will no doubt go for a quality full face helmet for future flights

Yep!!! Good point, OR should I say "good CHOICE" there, John! Yep, I guess it "somehow" suddenly dawned on you that evidently not everybody is as "fortunate enough" to have as hard a head as a certain lucky-azz dude(considering the seriousness of HIS recent accident) down there in Tucson has, huh???!!! (BTW Kevin, if you see this, THIS is how one "ef's" with another at BA.com WITHOUT bringing up or inserting their politics into it...just in case you didn't notice here!)

WOW! OK, Should it be no discussion of politics and helmet law? Folks are more devoted to their opinions on helmets, or helmet regulation than many other subjects. I for one just think they need to pass a law requiring all exhaust pipes to be less than 40db at idle.

OKAY GUYS, I'm gonna tackle the Rev's post FIRST here.... Quote:

WELL REV, HERE'S THE DEAL OK!
This thread IS ABOUT why some folks THINK they should wear as MUCH friggin' PROTECTION on their friggin' HEADS(where BTW, the BRAIN resides and WHERE people do that "thinking") and why they CHOOSE to wear one with the most protection available!!! PERIOD!!!
It was NOT, and I REPEAT NOT about ANY friggin' idea about "politicians telling us what we should wear or not wear on our heads"!!!
BUT, true to form "SOME FOLKS" around here always like to vent their FEARS about having their choice taken away from them whenever there's ANY discussion WHATSOEVER about the use of helmets IN GENERAL.
And unfortunately when THAT happens those SAME "some folks" will often, IF given half a friggin' chance, use these sorts of helmet threads as some sort of political soapbox due PRECISELY because they THEMSELVES have introduced the idea of those politicos in the FIRST PLACE!!!
And personally, I'M REALLY FRIGGIN' TIRED of THAT HAPPENING AROUND HERE!!!
(hey dude, you wanted a AND an explanation here, RIGHT???)

And NOW for YOU, Kevin... Quote:

He he....... And wild boars dont poop in the woods.
IF you were HALF as friggin' smart, observant and/or perceptive as you THINK you are, then you would NOTICE THAT whenever I insert almost ANY "sarcastic political message" in my posts, those posts almost ALWAYS tend to be NON-PARTISAN and they sarcastically make fun of ALL friggin' politicians.
Whereas YOU SIR are almost ALWAYS extremely PARTISAN in your postings and tend to RANT!!!
Remember your own words recently when in a thread that ONCE AGAIN you turned from a comedy to a rant(and subsequesntly forced the Mods to delete) where you said, "Death becomes them"? DEATH BECOMES THEM"???
What are you, the friggin' "God of Vengence" around here or somethin'?????
OH! And THEN, within 24 friggin' hours after the Mods deleted THAT thread, you started yet ANOTHER political thread in the Lounge about that moron who runs Iran and his little visit to the U.N. (yep...I saw THAT ONE TOO just before yet ANOTHER Mod deleted THAT one)
Look! Unless THAT friggin' moron rides a MOTORCYCLE around Tehran, WE DON'T WANT TO READ A RANT ABOUT HIS ENDEAVORS AT BA.COM!!!
Look! WE ALL GET IT!!! "YOU are the ONLY one who can direct us to all the "truths" out there in the world."
(...or at least it looks like you THINK you're the only one who can, anyway)
