D*mn. Well, this year, I am buying a new full face helmet. Not because of that video, but I can finally afford the $500 helmet I want.

2007 Custom America with BUBs I make my own parts cause I cant afford to buy theirs.

"The patient has an endotracheal tube, and a orogastric suction tube." Yeah.... They fit in pretty easily too, since he had no upper teeth left. Not to mention the fact that the broken lower jaw allowed plenty of wiggle room for everything to slide in..... Oh man, that makes me cringe, but I still wonder how often a crash results in a full facial impact like that. I wear a 3/4 helmet and a jacket with full armor, but now you have me thinking about more....

60% of chances involve the chin. that's a fairly lop sided coin flip, if you ask me. i admit i wear a 3/4 when it's warm, and i am just toodling around town, but only to reduce the sweat factor. otherwise, i want my head wrapped

I've said this before, a full-face is why I still have teeth.
They are warmer, but this is good under 70 degrees.
I wear mine in Fort Lauderdale even in August, just leave the face shield open and wear sunglasses.

When I was nineteen I hit a dog while riding a Yamaha enduro. I wasn't going particularly fast but it launched me over the handlebars, lost alot of hide but I was wearing a helmet and later on I noticed a big chunk missing out of the top of the helmet right where my forhead was. I never even felt my head hit the road. Been a big fan of helmets ever since. The human body can recover from traumatic injuries, but not so the brain. Sermon delivered. P.S. I have lost two motorcycle riding friends in my life , both to nothing more than head trauma, another spent two weeks in a coma from head trauma and was otherwise unhurt.

I've had three spills in my life. The only one that damaged the helmet happened when I wasn't wearing it. I had tied it to the side of the bike instead, and it really took a beating. None of those incidents otherwise damaged either my head or the helmet I was wearing. Guess I'm pretty good at slidin' on my knuckles.

I performed one of those 0 MPH pratfalls when I first got this Triumph. I was wearing the Triumph Paddock Jacket with armour in the elbows and shoulder and a good Full Face helmet, gloves and heavy boots.

I did not give the bike enuf clutch and she wand down hard.
My right wrist got sprained pretty bad, left ankle also and turned black and blue from the instep to halfway up the calf, inside of right knee from mid calf to mid thigh was really ugly and that is just the minor stuff.

The major impact came to my left elbow, shoulder and head.

The armour protected everything well and without it I am sure I would have had a concussion the the very least and probably and smashed elbow.

I heal slow in and within a month I did it again. Just landed somehow on back just left of midline and that took weeks for the pain to subside.

Now more of those pratfalls are not in the cards for me....I hope.

I can not stand the idea of looking in the mirror one day at a toothless face and crooked jaw, and having to admit that I just wanted to look cool.

I purchased an Arai of some kind for my cross continent ride this summer (They have enough space in ear area to install speakers) and I can honestly say that even in the hot unfiltered sun of the Badlands I was alright. Sure I envied the harley riders, as much for the ladies riding behind them as for the cool comfort that expressed with their skull caps and bare arms. But at the same time, I have never had to worry about bugs, dust, wind, or sunburns.

It has been said before I repeat it here: Dress for the crash, not for the ride.

Just think, of all the sheriff dept.& city police & state trooper divisions that have motorcycle patrols, not one of them (in the USA), with all their risk management studies, even ALLOW their officers to wear a full face helmet. I guess they never experience high speeds, quick and/or unexpected maneuvers, or ever go down.
Come to think of it, their official, assigned uniforms never include any of those pretty little riding leathers, assless chaps, or other horsecrap many others think are "necessary", wouldn't leave home without it items.

An often overlooked fact. With the exception of time in the military, I have not and will not live in a state where helmets are required. However I always wear an open face helmet of some sort. (Okay some of the antiques I have worn would more accurately be described as helmet-like) This is my own decision and that's the way I like it. 'Let Those who Ride Decide' extends to type of helmet as well. No helmet looks cool, rather there are differing degrees of nerdiness depending on the helmet.

If you don't want to wear a helmet, fine.
If you only want to wear a half helmet, fine.
If you only want to wear an open face helmet, fine.
If you only want to wear a full face helmet, fine.

But if you want to tell me why a full face helmet is safer, I will in turn point out that riding in your car is safer still.

Your odds of avoiding head or face injury from a slip walking on the sidewalk go WAY up if you wear a full face helmet. It's amazing how many people just walk around unprotected.

Hey, I won't force you to eat Corn Flakes, let alone wear a helmet.
The title of this thread is why I wear a full face helmet.
Look at that picture.
I hit face first.
The reason I can write this is an Icon Alliance Aggressor helmet.
But seriously, try the Corn Flakes.

No assless chaps.
Just an observation.

Okay, let's see here...It's been suggested in this thread that there's some kind of correlation between walking down the sidewalk at, say, 4mph, AND driving down the street at, say, 50mph in a car, WITH riding a motorcyle at, say, 50mph. And, that the likelihood of said banana peel or maybe an unrepaired crack in said sidewalk causing at this "tremendous speed" of 4mph of walking speed, OR being ENCLOSED within in a steel reinforced cage while becoming involved in an accident has the comparable RISK FACTOR of SEVERE HEAD TRAUMA as riding a motorcycle sans helmet, RIGHT?!

Well, all can say here is that I TOO would prefer that the government stay out of the business of mandating the use of helmets, HOWEVER, please excuse me here if I think that ANYBODY who believes that all of the above scenarios have an EQUAL CHANCE of happening and an EQUAL MEASURE of potential injury is THEN somebody who probably DOESN'T NEED to wear a "brain bucket", because they just don't seem to be usin' that part of their body that goes into one ANYWAY!!!

(well, at LEAST that part of the body which encompasses the ability to ponder such things as the "LAWS OF PROBABILITY" anyway!)

I wear one because: it's warmer in winter and cooler in summer than a 3/4 (I have half, 3/4, and full face so I know from my own riding); it suits me better than a windshield; I want to keep my jaw and teeth intact as long as I can; I don't heal so fast anymore. I have an acquaintance that caught a chert rock in the chin from a dump truck after it bounced off the highway. Not pretty and not for me.

Well erle, seein' as how Mom ain't here right now, I'll attempt to answer that question for ya.

Yep! You'll still get buck-teeth alright!

Well, that is IF, as Mom said, you don't stop flipping open the face-shield, sticking your hand through the opening and quit sucking your thumb all the time!

(and let me tell somethin' here dude...THAT was a HECK of a lot harder to do back in those early "Bell Star" Helmet days, what with that itty-bitty little port-hole of a face opening those things had back then!...yep, these new full-face helmets today have come a long way since then in creating a whole new generation of riders with an major overbite problem!!!)

What is the consensus on modular helmets. Are they toast upon impact in that the chin bar is going to blast off and not offer the protection one might think they are getting?

I haven't used a modular. From what I've read, it depends on the locking mechanism. Some use plastic and some use metal. Haven't seen any actual tests on it, though.

A comment of the Nolan 103: I recently searched the market for a new flip face to replace my old NoLan 100. After trying all of the flip faces, I ended up back at the new NoLan 103. In this test, they complained the Nolan 103 visor did not ratchet up and down properely but they must have tested an early Nolan 103 because my visor ratchets up and down nicely.

I picked the 103 because (1.) I Like highly visible, yellow gear (2.) Going back to a D rng fastener after the slide lock/quick off NoLan fastener is just too clumsly (3) The 103 fit and easy of operation is far superior to my old NoLan and as good as any other helmet I looked at (4) solid metal to metal locking components.

Helmets are highly personalized and the 103 may not be for everyone. It is middle of the price range of flip faces but if you shop on the net and bargain, you can come WAY down from the list price. The 103 is quieter and much more convenient than my first one. Now I'm saving my pennies for the N-COM communication gear that fits it.

I sure like my Fulmer Modus (flip-up) an awful lot. It's very comfortable, produces little wind-noise, and feels very solid. It seems to get pretty good ratings, and costs anywhere from $150 to $200, depending on the retailer.
