I think Triumph did exactly that here, except for the fresh new name. Instead they opted for a catchy classic name to keep the line going. Sounds to me like the only bike you would need or like is one you have built yourself. Such is life. Enjoy what you have, keep it shiny side up and don't hate me because I will be riding a bike you're not fond of.

The Thunderbird is not an upgrade; it's an entirely different bike. It exhibits few of the primary attributes that moved the America/Speedy into the market, such as affordability and nostalgic attraction. It stands in stark contrast to both the BA and R3 in fact, delivering little or nothing that isn't already abundant in the marketplace.

You might be jumpin' the gun. I'll be surprised if this is in production long enough for many folks to buy them.

And so as not to be misunderstood, let me say that I hope you get one. My opinion on this matter has nothing to do with whether I personally like the bike or would buy/ride one. Also, I don't want Triumph to fail at this, I just think they will, for the reasons previously stated.

DeJavu These are the same as 2003 concerning the RocketIII. Go to the archives...rumors. more rumors, spy pics, rumors, unvailing. Some hated it, some loved it. Some that hated it loved it after a test ride, bought one and visa versa.
Sorry for the spelling my CSN&Y dvd is in the truck.

Come on Jack. You don't think Triumph did their market reasearch on this? Most big companies do their homework before the let anybody go to the john. This new Triumph is going to be more popular then the R-3, mark my words. Triumph is not going to spend millions on research and develoment a new product unless they know there is a demand for it.

+1. I definitely think the bike will be successful. I'm still hoping they make some design changes so it will stand out more as a Triumph cruiser. I'm not big on the bobbed rear end, pipes, or the chopped (sprocket?) cover. But, I do believe the need is there for something between the R3 and SM/BA.
Maybe after a year they will do a touring version like the R3 and work in some design changes. I will be watching it's progress.

That's going to be huge if they make a touring package you can buy off the showroom floor. The big thing for me will be price, if I can get the R-3 touring for only a couple thousand more, it's going to be a difficult choice.

Well Pes, I don't really have an inside scoop on Triumph's marketing culture. But big companies produce flops all the time. History is full of them. This even happened at one mid-size copmany in PA where I was the sales/marketing manager. The CEO started steering the company off track, and just wouldn't listen to those of us who knew. I quit, rather than be involved in the crash, and the company failed altogether within a few years. Before that happened, the company had been successful and profitable for nearly 40 years. It was one of the saddest events in my career to see that business fail.
Anyway, you guys do your worst. I call it as I see it.

I agree with most of what Jack says on this one. I don't think it offers much that isn't already abundant on the market. I also know it isn't "most" BA and SM owners that are looking at buying on but some. I have no interest in it myself. I think they would have done better to offer a bigger displacement SM and leave the America as it is. Leave it air cooled too. That way you would have the 865 America and the 1500 + or - cc Speedmaster. Maybe even work a deal with Wiseco to use their parts to make the larger SM and market it as such. I know the Wiseco name would draw some buyers all by itself. I think the new T bird lacks style and the Triumph look. I know many of you will disagree and that's your right and those of you that want one I hope you are happy with it and it turns out to be a dependable well made machine.

Dang, Dog, that thought hadn't even occured to me. Adding some space between the BA and Speedy is (dare I say without you havin' to buy new hats?) GENIUS. It would add a serious contender to the line without mortgaging the farm or hiring Kawasquawki to reinvent finless motors. Seriously, that's just PURE EFFIN GENIUS.

Now, let's see here: When you say ... "... or hiring Kawasquawki to reinvent finless motors." You didn't notice Triumph have been building some pretty competitive motors in their line-up already and didn't have to "mortgage the farm"? That's just PURE EFFIN IGNORANT. When you say ... "I'll be surprised if this is in production long enough for many folks to buy them." AND "Well keep dreamin' buddy boy, cuz those photos are as close as you'll ever get." When you know some people are interested in this bike, even to the point of making sacrifices and you go on and on about it ... Sure, you don't have to like it but I'd say your persistence demonstrates PURE EFFIN NASTINESS and a KILLJOY attitude (MALAKAS in my language). When you say ... "... this bike had little draw except to perhaps a limited number of existing Triumph owners." Since the American public haven't EVEN SEEN this bike yet ... I'd say that statement is just PURE EFFIN STUPID. It has been noticed you didn't rise to the challenge when asked to put your money where your mouth is but continue spouting hot air (ok. so you obviously love steam engines) ... well, that's just PURE EFFIN ...
Bedouin.

With all the success owners have had with big bore kits, it would make sense for Triumph to offer a larger displacement of the same bike. Making this the Speedmaster would create a little more than cosmetic differences and get them another grand for the bike.
I don't see why they still couldn't do this even with the Thunderbird.

We've had threads in "Other Bikes" locked before haven't we? This won't be the first one, right? I'm sure any other ones locked were Thunderbird related too.
