Still ugly, don't like the pipes, sprocket cover, or lack of cooling fins among a few other points. I'll stick with my SM.

Dang it!!! And HERE(besides that little "fin issue" I'm been obsessing about) is yet ANOTHER REASON I'm having a few qualms about this otherwise cool new bike!

You see, I was hopein' it would've AT LEAST had a 6-speed "INTERMITTENT mesh" gearbox!!!

Now THAT would be fun, huh?! I can see it all now..."Okay baby! Are you stay in gear THIS TIME???!!!

(in other words, don't pretty much ALL modern motorcycles have "constant mesh gearboxes"??? And so, why is that that's always shown on these Spec Sheets, huh? Especially in this case where there's no mention of a stat which I'm almost sure more riders care much more about finding out than that...ie: the darn WEIGHT of this motorcycle!)

Okay, on this weight thing, we have two numbers.
First the claimed weight
I'm guessing 625lbs.

Now the real, ready-to-ride weight, I'm going 718lbs.

I'll guess 595 lbs. But what about the price? Most other cruisers in this range go from around $1200-1400. I'm going to guess $1289. If you get too close to R-3 land, price, engine size, or weight, people will just buy an R-3...maybe.
After seeing a belt fly off a bike at the last GA. rally though, I'm thinking may be a shaft may be more desirable and reliable, for a bike if touring is your number one purpose.

I think I forgot a zero or three. $12,999 sounds about right. You all did notice the standard R-3 went up around $600 for '09, didn't you? Maybe it was in anticipation of pricing the new Thunderbird next year??? Yota won the displacement guess along time ago. He always said 1620cc's.

May??? I thought it wasn't coming out until October 09, according to Triumph Inc. May would make more sense though. Crap, I need to get a couple of more jobs and make some quick money. Maybe I should visit the local sperm bank to see what they would give me to whip out few mini-me's.

Maybe it's just me, but I would try to get it out in like March, when people start itching to get a new bike, not in July, when you have the chance to lose a couple months of sales.

I would say you are right.
If it is July, then my guess is either further modifications they had in the pipeline and/or production scheduling limitations.

The reason I say maybe "further modifications they had in the pipeline" is because they are not forthcoming with the weight of the bike and perhaps that's why.

IMO they've had plenty of time to get it into production. I hate to open this can of worms, but I wonder if the US version will be assembled in Thailand also???

Hey! I wonder if this delay might've been caused by Mr.Bloor and his gang readin' about my little qualm about the lack of those FINS on that motor at BA.com, and so they've decided to "correct that" before it hit the market????

If that's the case, I hope you guys realize you can thank little ol' ME for my valiant efforts over these past few months around here!!!

(...or maybe blame me for the delay, anyway!)

BTW...my guess regarding what its "wet weight"[all fluids and battery installed] will be is...618lbs.

(619, if my theory about them adding those fins at the last minute is true, of course)

What's wrong with your eyes, son? That engine's got fins. They're just teeny tiny ones. I wish Bloor would do something about the ugly line from the fuel injection to the air box, though.

Now I remember where I got the October '09 introduction date that was in my head. Donny and I had dinner with the Triumph truck employees this past summer and THEY told us Oct. Maybe it is July in Europe and Sept or Oct. in the USA.

"Teeny TINY ones"?!!! Why boy, THIS here is AMERICA! And that thare motorsickle was ESPECIALLY MADE for us Americans, from I hear tell!!!

And boy, "Teeny tiny" just ain't never good 'nough for us Americans, ya know!!!

And, as I said above somewhere, all them thare boys over thare on that teeny tiny li'l island o' their's(well, "teeny tiny" compared to this HERE big ol' country o' OURS, anyway) have to do to fix THAT there OTHER problem y'all mentioned is to put a couple o' them there perforated chrome suckers that look like them there ol' Amal air-cleaner covers to cover up that unsightly li'l area. Yep! Just like what's on our very own BAs and Speedies! And THEN there's ya yet ANOTHER little aesthetic problem solved, young man!!!

(this here stuff ain't no Rocket Science, ya know kid!!!)

I visited with my Triumph dealer rep at the San Mateo, Ca bike show on Friday evening and I asked again if he had heard anything different than what he told me before (Feb-March) and he said - They are building a stock pile of T-Birds for world-wide delivery and all dealers will get them all about the same time.
He assured me I am number one on his list (he has had my $500 since Sept) and I have first purchase option of the first T-bird he gets with a preference of a all black bike.
We will see on the timing of delivery but I believe my rep when he says Feb-March.

So, which segment of American buyers do you think Triumph is targeting with this bike? What is its fundamental place in the market? Does it even have a unique identity, other than sporting Triumph badges? Which specific motorcycles is it intended to displace, and what would recommend it to first-time Triumph buyers over those other machines? Based on appearances, I really have to wonder whether Mr. Bloor asked himself such questions before embarking on this venture. It has all the earmarks of a "build it and they will come" approach. Let's face it, even before the credit world tanked, this bike had little draw except to perhaps a limited number of existing Triumph owners. Mr. Bloor, you've stubbed your toe. Upgrade the America instead, price it right, give it a fresh new name, and you'll have at least one more chance to field a winner.

Hello Kevin,
I drove my 23-T Roadster around the streets of Northern NJ in 1967 and 68. I'm originally from Mahwah up on the New York State boarder but have been in Northern Ca since the US AF dropped me off here in 1973.
Where do you reside?
I also ride a 05 Speedmaster that I have been customizing with Stainless steel bits and pieces for the last 3 years. It's a great bike to ride and in my opinion one of the best looking bikes on the street. That is exactly why I’m so excited about the T-bird. Besides being a Triumph it stirs-up memories of my Hot Rod 23-T roadster just like the Speedmaster did when I first saw it – They are both Hot Rods in their own right. I doubt I will purchase very many of Triumphs accessories for the bike but from my perspective there sure are a lot of places to put stainless steel on the Thunderbird.
I will not let my Speedmaster go – I do like the air-cooled fins and carburetors that I can work on but I sure am anxious to get my hands on a T-bird to make one good looking touring bike out of it. I plan to be riding one out to NJ to visit friends and family in 2010.
As far as your comment on Delivery – I think I’m the only one saying it will be here in early 09.
The rags have been saying Summer of 09 all along. They just keep forgetting that it is always riding weather in Ca (summer) so they get confused and assume July September is what Triumph means.
I hope I’m right on the timing and Fast Eddy and or New Bonneville is pumping out after-market pieces for the T-bird by this coming summer.

Happy Holidays to you All,

Gary

How about people who want a biggish displacement cruiser that should handle well (judging from the America/Speedmaster) from a marque with some history and an engine with significantly more guts.
Those who also don't want a HD.

A matter of opinion.
Those America/SM owners who have seen it and sat on it ... want it (nearly all of them).

Based on appearances, I really have to wonder whether Mr. Bloor asked himself such questions before embarking on this venture.

My guess is he did his homework and wasn't hanging around for the naysayers to do it for him.

It has all the earmarks of a "build it and they will come" approach.

And what do you think they did with the America/Speedmaster, or weren't you watching at the time?
BTW, he also listened and did a lot of the mods we were complaining about.
You having a recent ('08) model probably means you weren't around here at the time.

Let's face it, even before the credit world tanked, this bike had little draw except to perhaps a limited number of existing Triumph owners.

Wow! How do you know that?
They (the public) haven't even seen it yet.

Mr. Bloor, you've stubbed your toe.

Yeah right, he's stupid.

Bedouin. Blessed are those eyes that have seen more roads than any man! (Homer).

Hello Kevin,
I drove my 23-T Roadster around the streets of Northern NJ in 1967 and 68. I'm originally from Mahwah up on the New York State boarder but have been in Northern Ca since the US AF dropped me off here in 1973.
Where do you reside?
Happy Holidays to you All,

Gary

Hi Gary, I grew up in Bergen County too, but it sounds like I'm 5-10 years younger than you.

When you get back this way on your new TBird, we'll show you some of the nice riding spots out in western NJ.
Merry Christmas!

Kevin,
I plan on making stops all along the way so we will have to keep in touch. My two brothers are still in NJ. One in Mahwah and the other lives up towards Greenwood Lake area.
Best Regards,
Gary (58 and getting younger every time I jump on the Speedmaster)

Gary, that would be great!

Whether you love or hate the upcoming TBird, the timing is going to be tough. Big cc bikes are selling slowly these days.
